2024 OHSAA Tournament: Regional Preview - Division III

Division III State and Regional Tournament Bracket

Division III Preview

Region 9 - Massillon

Region Overview: Norwayne trailed 4-0 in the first inning and 6-4 in the seventh only to come back for a 7-6 eight-inning win over Canton Central Catholic in the district semifinals, then run-ruled Akron Manchester 12-2 in the finals to win a regional berth for the second time in school history, the other back in 2004. … Jason Pentek allowed four hits in a 6-0 win over LaBrae, sending Perry to the regionals for the first time in 20 years. Pentek had an RBI double in a five-run sixth while Kyle Rhineberger had two hits and drove in two for Perry. … Shane Coblentz fanned a dozen in a one-hit outing against Tri-Valley in a 2-0 district semifinal win before two-time defending state champion Waynedale cruised past Columbia 17-1 in the finals. … South Range is back in the regional for the fourth straight year. South Range, which lost to Waynedale 14-1 in the regional finals a year ago, has outscored opponents 25-3 in the postseason after an 11-1 five-inning district final win over Garrettsville Garfield.

      Coach's Thoughts:

PBR: What are a couple of things you like about your team right now?
Coach: We have a lot of senior leadership with 4 guys committed to play at the next level (Mike Steingass- Walsh, Logan Dichler- St. Leo, Lucas Dudte- Lake Erie, and Beau Polen- Muskingum). We are hitting and pitching altogether at the right time.

PBR: Talk about the feeling when your team won districts?
Coach: The guys have been so close in the past (lost to Kenston in the District Final in D2 last year), so they were very excited - especially getting a big lead early. We had huge goals for this year, and we truly think that we have a great opportunity to make a run.

PBR: Thoughts about being able to play in the regionals?
Coach: These are 4 of the best teams in the state of Ohio, and having this opportunity to play on this stage with my guys is a humbling experience.

PBR: Thoughts on the four-team’s as a whole that are at the regional?
Coach: Perry is a very strong and disciplined team who can really swing the bat and will definitely be well coached with Coach Platt at the helm. South Range is a normal cog at the regional, and with the experience, the coaching of Coach Hanek, and the pitching of Tarajack, they have a very strong team. Waynedale is going to be well coached and have a strong top of the line up and an elite arm in Shane Coblentz (I also teach there and was on staff there for the past 5 years and have nothing but the utmost respect for Coach Daugherty and that team). All-in-all, this group of four teams shows why there have been so many state champs out of northeast Ohio in the past years.

PBR: Anything else you would like to add?
Coach: I want to thank the community for being our backbone and supporting us on this run, so far. With this being my first year as the head coach, I am so blessed to have great mentors that have helped me this year. Finally, these players deserve all of the praise. Since day one, they have had a checklist of goals, and we have been able to check so many boxes so far. The regionals is the next job to get done.

          Coach's Thoughts:

PBR: What are a couple of things you like about your team right now?
Coach: We're effective because everyone can contribute, 1 though 10 and even off the bench. Our guys have embraced their roles of tables setters, producers, defenders, starters, or relievers and because of that mindset, they have excelled their positions. I also love that this team seems to always answer the bell when meeting a challenge. Even when they fail, they come back even more determined. That approach to this sport, and more important, that approach to life, is going to make these guys very successful.

PBR: Talk about the feeling when your team won districts?
Coach: As a coach, I was so happy for my guys because they deserve all the praise and recognition that is offered. I have witness their tireless effort dating back to last fall. Their dedication paid off and rightfully so!

PBR: Thoughts about being able to play in the regionals?
Coach: It is an awesome opportunity and I know we intended to be fully prepared to put everything we have on the field. On top of our relentless mindset, we're pretty talented too. Our approach is not just a "happy to be here" mentality. We are not content. We want to come back Friday, we want to play the following weekend. We know we have a great test on Thursday with Norwayne. Great team, well coached. It should be a great battle.

PBR: Thoughts on the four-team’s as a whole that are at the regional?
Coach: Any four of these teams can win it all. Excellent collection of Ohio Baseball. I hope a lot of people come out and take in some very inspired high school baseball games.

          • Brock Reifsnyder, DH/OF, 2027
          • Kolten Roeder, P

          Coach's Thoughts:

PBR: What are a couple of things you like about your team right now?
Coach: I think we are coming together as a team and we are playing consistent baseball. I like our lineup from top to bottom, I think all 9 can be tough to pitch to. I also like the defense we have been playing lately behind our pitchers.

PBR: Talk about the feeling when your team won districts?
Coach: I felt very proud of the team. We lost a couple of key players to injury this year, and that caused a need for some young players to step up into bigger roles.

PBR: Thoughts about being able to play in the regionals?
Coach: I am glad that we are still playing baseball this time of year. It is fun to be playing meaningful baseball at the same time that school is getting out. I know that we have some challenging opponents ahead of us, but we are looking forward to the challenge.

PBR: Thoughts on the four-team’s as a whole that are at the regional?
Coach: I think we are in a very strong region. All of the teams that made it have had great seasons and are obviously playing good baseball to still be in the tournament.

PBR: Anything else you would like to add?
Coach: I am very thankful to coach at a school that supports our baseball program so much. I am also blessed to have a coaching staff that goes above and beyond to help the program and give our players a good experience.

                Region 10 - Hamler

Region Overview: Drew Tajblik set the school record for wins in a season with 10 in the district semifinal 8-1 win over Archbold and then Lake knocked out Ottawa Hills, a state semifinal participant last year, 8-4 in the finals to advance to regionals for the first time since 2014. … The road to the regionals was far from easy for Wynford, which defeated Ashland Crestview 7-6 in the sectional finals and edged Margaretta 7-5 in the district semis before a 7-2 win over Oak Harbor for its first district title since 1996. … Coldwater took advantage of 13 free passes and scored 11 runs with two outs in a 12-3 win over Liberty-Benton to capture the 28th district title in school history but first since 2019. Braylen Harlamert had three RBIs and AJ Harlamert two in a 7-3 district semifinal victory over Eastwood. … Jace Brooks hit a walkoff single to plate Kort Sears, who led off the bottom of the seventh with a triple in Marengo Highland’s 6-5 district final win over Newark Catholic. Sears threw a two-hitter in a 16-0 sectional final win over Madison Plains and hit a double and home run in the district semifinal 6-4 triumph versus Columbus Academy. This marks the fourth district title in school history for Marengo, winners of 15 league championships since 2005, including the last six MOAC titles in a row.

PBR: What are a couple of things you like about your team right now?
Coach: I love the way this group enjoys being around each other and playing baseball together. That has made this journey a lot of fun. And, I also really like how they constantly battle and fight during games, whether we are winning or losing. Guys in our dugout believe in each other and what they can do as a unit, and that is a great dynamic to observe as a coach.

PBR: Talk about the feeling when your team won districts?
Coach: It was really enjoyable to see the culmination of a lot of work that has been put in by players and coaches collectively, and that it result in a district title, especially in a district that I felt was really deep with good teams.

PBR: Thoughts about being able to play in the regionals?
Coach: At this time of the year or season, it is always a great thing to be able to keep adding opportunities to compete together as a team on the ball field.

Coach: Every team that is left is here for a reason. We're excited to be able to show up at Patrick Henry and compete with and against three other solid ball clubs.

PBR: Anything else you would like to add?
Coach: We've had a really proud tradition of baseball at Lake High School and to see our players buy into that and want to carry that on for the community and for the young players that will fill their shoes one day has been really special to be a part of.

                          Coach's Thoughts:

PBR: What are a couple of things you like about your team right now?
Coach: These Guys really like hanging out with each other. Our strongest teams have been teams that you have to kick out of the dugout after workouts and games - they just enjoy being together. These Guys love to be challenged and the process of getting better.

PBR: Talk about the feeling when your team won districts?
Coach: It is a special feeling because you have to be good and lucky to advance to the Regional level. The Central District is loaded with powerhouse programs so to be able to win the Sectional and District tournaments is quite an accomplishment.

PBR: Thoughts about being able to play in the regionals?
Coach: It really is an opportunity to compete against some of the best programs in the state. The tournament is the last 16 school programs left in each division, so everybody at this level is talented.

PBR: Thoughts on the four-team’s as a whole that are at the regional?
Coach: Our Region is very talented! We will face Coldwater, which is one of the most prolific baseball programs in our state. They are athletic and very well coached, and will be one of the toughest teams we have faced this season. They play ‘old school’ baseball and are very disciplined. Very impressive team. The team that wins our matchup will face the winner of Wynford and Milbury Lake, two talented teams. Wynford has one of the best athletes in the state, and Lake has a powerful 1-2 combination with their pitching staff. It should be a really fun Region to watch!

PBR: Anything else you would like to add?
Coach: It is a real honor to represent our community at this level of the tournament. We are truly blessed to have the support from our Families and School district to be able to give our Boys a great baseball experience.

                            Region 11 - Chillicothe/Columbus

Districts: Southeast 2 vs. Southeast 1 | East vs. Southeast 3

Region Overview: Fairland’s Ethan Wall fanned eight and went the distance in a 5-4 district final victory against Chillicothe Huntington, while right fielder Carson Sansum threw out a runner at home plate to end the game. Fairland, which split games during the regular season with Portsmouth, losing 14-6 and winning 3-1, scored three runs in the top of the sixth to beat Zane Trace 6-4 in the semis after nipping Rock Hill 3-2 in sectionals. … Portsmouth overcame a three-run deficit and beat Lynchburg-Clay 6-5 in the district finals, scoring the winning run on a wild pitch. Deandre Berry gave up one earned run for the Ohio Valley Conference champions, which had not given up a run in its two previous tournament wins. This marks the first regional berth for Portsmouth since 1996. … A six-run fifth inning lifted Barnesville to a 10-6 victory over Sandy Valley and a second regional trip in four years for the Shamrocks, which beat Buckeye Trail 2-0 in the sectional finals and Sugarcreek Garaway 3-1 in the district semifinals. … Minford avenged two regular-season defeats to Wheelersburg with a 3-1 win, sending the Falcons to the regional for the fifth time in six seasons. Mason Bradley and Grant Wheeler combined to pitch for Minford, which lost in the district finals in 2023.

                                    Coach's Thoughts:

PBR: What are a couple of things you like about your team right now?
Coach: I think we are playing good team defense and our pitchers are limiting walks and pitching to contact. Also, we are applying a lot of pressure to defenses with small ball and overall team speed.

PBR: Talk about the feeling when your team won districts?
Coach: Portsmouth High School used to be a juggernaut for winning district titles that I got to experience during my playing days at my alma mater, but it has been since 1996 that we've won a district title. The joy on the kids faces after the walk off win for the district crown was a reminder on why we coach! So much fun!

PBR: Thoughts about being able to play in the regionals?
Coach: We are in the Sweet 16 of D3! There are a lot of great teams still playing ball and anything can happen when you get to this point. We are just glad and feel blessed to still be playing at this point in the season.

PBR: Thoughts on the four-team’s as a whole that are at the regional?
Coach: The 4 teams in the Regionals are all quality opponents and we are very familiar with 2 of them. We played Minford twice this season as well as Fairland twice. Fairland is in our conference and we won our conference (OVC) this season. We aren't familiar with Barnesville, but we know about their great tradition in athletics.

PBR: Anything else you would like to add?
Coach: Portsmouth Baseball wasn't in a very good place for nearly 2 decades. There are a lot of proud alumni that have waited for the return of the baseball program to a state of, not just respectability, but to championship caliber. This year's seniors have won 4 straight sectional titles, an OVC championship, and now a District title. They have compiled a (17-13 record as Frosh), (18-7 record as sophs), (24-4 record as Jrs), and are currently sitting at a (23-6 record as Srs)

PBR: What are a couple of things you like about your team right now?
Coach: I have been really happy with the pitching staff all season, but our defense has really picked up over the second half of the season.

PBR: Talk about the feeling when your team won districts?
Coach: Huge sense of accomplishment from the players and coaches. This group has worked really hard all year, overcome some adversity, and to see them celebrate you could see the pure joy.

PBR: Thoughts about being able to play in the regionals?
Coach: Always a huge honor to make it this far in the tournament. We play in a tremendous district in which I have alot of respect for the teams and their coaches, so to be able to represent our district means alot.

PBR: Thoughts on the four-team’s as a whole that are at the regional?
Coach: Anytime a team makes it to the regional you know they are extremely talented. Combine that with the tradition of these schools it will be a very tough regional.

PBR: Anything else you would like to add?
Coach: I am very blessed to coach in a community that truly loves baseball and supports us the way Barnesville does. I am also very fortunate to have a coaching staff that is as knowledgeable and passionate about the game as they are. They are so involved in the game they take alot of pressure off me and do a great job getting our kids in the best positions to make plays.

                                                  Coach's Thoughts:

PBR: What are a couple of things you like about your team right now?
Coach: We're pitching it well and playing solid defense. We continued our belief that something good is going to happen offensively as long as we stay in the game, and it's been a successful recipe thus far.

PBR: Talk about the feeling when your team won districts?
Coach: Proud. These seniors were sophomores when I took the helm at Brookville. Seeing them grow, mature, and come together into this family that we see today has been one of the most rewarding things ever.

PBR: Thoughts about being able to play in the regionals?
Coach: We're excited for the opportunity and look forward to some great baseball this week.

PBR: Thoughts on the four-team’s as a whole that are at the regional?
Coach: Heath is the obvious one, they've been here and done it. As always there's good baseball in the Cincy area as well, so having Country Day and Cincinnati Christian in the regional will make this one, one of the best around.

PBR: Anything else you would like to add?
Coach: Seeing the community support as we've made this run has been awesome. The Brookville community loves baseball and to see us have the success we've had the last two seasons has only allowed the community to come out and support this group of awesome young men. We look forward to seeing them show out again on Thursday.
