2024 OHSAA Tournament: Division IV State Final - No. 3 Hiland vs Fort Recovery

AKRON - Grady Monigold hit a two-out two-run double in the sixth inning to give Berlin Hiland a 3-2 win over Fort Recovery, the second consecutive Division IV state title for the Hawks.

Until that point, Fort Recovery led throughout after putting two runs on the board in the bottom of the first. Troy Homan led off with a double and Reece Wendel followed with a single before Caden Homan brought in the first run of the game with an RBI ground out. WIth two away, Caden Grisez plated Wendel with a run-scoring single.

Grisez proceeded to not allow an earned run to the third-ranked team in Ohio through five, scattering five hits while not walking a batter.

But in the Hiland sixth, the Hawks, which scored an unearned run in the fourth, put two on the board. Colin Coblentz led off with a single and went to second on a Brady Yoder sac bunt. Kaden Kandel then walked before a pop out for the second out. Monigold then came up big with a shot to right-center to bring in what proved to be the game-winning run.

Brady Yoder closed out the game after that. The Hiland senior, who entered the game in relief of starter Finn Schneider in the fifth, gave up a leadoff single to Grisez but then retired three straight to complete a 27-5 season for the Hawks.

Fort Recovery closed out the season with a 16-13 record.

HOT TAKES

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Last year Grady Monigold had four hits helping Berlin Hiland to the state championship. In this year's finals the sophomore came up with the hit of the game, lining a shot to right-center field for a two-run double with two outs in the sixth inning for what proved to be the game-winning hit.

D-IV TOURNEY MVP: Caden Coblentz threw a five-hit shutout in the semifinals against Russia and had a pair of singles in the state title game leading Hiland to a second consecutive crown.

WHAT’S NEXT?: Wendel and Grisez are two of four starters returning for Fort Recovery and head coach Kevin Eyink, who picked up his 100th coaching victory at state. ... Hiland will be loaded once again with the Coblentz twins back along with Monigold and three other starters. With four trips to state in the past eight years, the Hawks once again will be one of the teams to beat - most likely in Division VI next year.
