Top Performer Spotlight: 2022 LHP/1B Jake Lanzer (Newburgh Free Academy)

It was a historic preseason here in New York with our boots-on-the-ground scouting staff covering 700+ players at showcase events, all February long. The dust has settled and we are now ramping up our efforts in player rankings, scouting reports, and recap articles. Scouting Report

Physical: 6-foot-3, 175-pounds. Solid frame; physical; potential for more weight.
Run: 7.38 runner in the 60.
Hit: LHH. Wide stance; good use of lower half; short leg kick into a low stride; quick hands; high one-handed finish Upward swing path; hard, consistent contact up middle; solid line drives.
Power: 90 MPH raw exit velocity. shows power potential to pull side.
Defense: Glove pat with ball for timing; slow footwork when approaching ball then explodes during throw and gets his entire body behind; solid glove work and really looks the ball in.
Arm: Smooth 3/4 arm slot; long arm swing. INF - 86 MPH.

Pitching Delivery: Up tempo with a high leg lift building momentum, works in line accelerating hand speed through release.
Arm Action: Long, clean arm swing; builds arm speed to a high 3/4 slot.
FB: T83, 81-83 MPH. Downhill plane, commanded in the zone.
CB: 69-70 MPH. 12-6, late sharp break.

Standout Skill

I enjoyed what I saw on the mound from Lanzer and I hope I'm able to eventually watch him in a game compete on the bump. Developing and getting stronger is only going to make it that much better. He lives at the knees with both FB and off-speed working both sids of the plate. His quick tempo and downhill action I think will mess with some hitters.

Player Projection

The possibility of being an dual player is there, but I like his presence on the mound. Physical, lean, 6-foot-4 LHP on the bump is a good look to have. Lanzer can really spin the off-speed and command it as the same time. Filling up the zone with his FB and only going to get better, pitching is where I would like to see more of.

Quick Hit
"Firm glove work defensively, would like to see him work a little lower with the baseball while fielding. Arm action is very loose and looks to come up with ease. Watch over-striding, already in a wide stance so try no to end up on your front foot and lose power. Barrel whips through the zone and has pop to go with some quick hands. Pitching, looks comfortable, high tempo, and great usage of lower half to drive off of."
