The Rode Show: 2019 Super 60
February 5, 2019
McCOOK, IL—The 17th annual Super 60 took place Sunday at The Max, with 67 top prospects performing in front of more than 100 scouts from major league organizations. Things started quickly, quite literally, with some high-level 60-yard dash times being turned in. OF Ethan Vecrumba (Edgewood HS, IN) turned in the top time with a 6.34—and that was with a slight stumble. SS Connor Beichler (Owasso HS, OK) and OF Jase Bowen (Central Catholic HS, OH) turned in a 6.38 and 6.47 respectively. On the 20-to-80 scouting scale, anything less than 7.0 is considered at least average and 24 of the position players or two-way guys did that.
A record was set in exit velocity with SS Tommy Benson (IMG Academy, FL) obliterating a baseball off a tee at 111 mph. RHP/OF Mason Auer (Kickapoo HS, MO) tied a fastball record by hitting 96 in his bullpen session.
Among the position players, OF Kendal Ewell (Marist HS, IL) arguably helped himself the most. He ran a 6.53 60, threw 94 from the outfield and showed a quick, efficient swing with loose hands and barrel whip at the plate. OF Jack Frank (Strongsville HS, OH) turned in a 6.51 60 and showed a short left-handed stroke at the plate. 3B Blake Robertson (Edmond Santa Fe HS, OK) probably had the best BP round on the day, showing excellent raw power from the left side with the ability to keep his swing short despite a longer frame. SS Justin Boyd (Legend HS, CO) showed solid tools across the board. He has clean hands on defense and a compact right-handed stroke.
As always, the day wrapped up with pitchers. In addition to his blazing fastball, Auer snapped off some sharp breaking balls. RHP Joe Biancone (John Jay Cross River HS, NY) looks like a Northeast sleeper, pitching in the low 90s and showing a sharp breaking ball of his own. RHP Thomas Wilhite (West Ouachita HS, LA) ran his fastball up to 95 while showing feel for a changeup. LHP Colin Czajkowski (Woodhaven HS, MI) was up to 92 from a lower slot with whippy hand speed.
