Rookie Review: '26 OF/RHP Cam Grasso (Niskayuna)
May 13, 2023
As we make our way through the spring and into the summer months, our staff will be rolling out a series of in-depth pieces on uncommitted talent around the empire state.
ID: Mohawk Valley featured (60) total prospects on February 21 at Accelerate Sports in Whitesboro, NY, where rookie '26 OF Cam Grasso stood out with A/AVG run and an overall toolsy skill set. Though there's more to come physically, the three-sport athlete already moves efficiently at 6-foot, 160-pounds.
Cam Grasso OF / RHP / Niskayuna , NY / 2026
What We Liked: Ran an impressive 1.63/6.76 10YD to 60YD split. An early loader at the plate, Grasso controlled a quiet leg-lift stride from the RH box with occasional weight-shift into the front side. Showed some natural feel for a whippy barrel, up to a T88MPH EV and 73% sweet spot. Dominant top hand that turned it quickly for a 55% line-drive rate. Leveraged the front foot and delivered his furthest blast an estimated 300FT via Trackman. The outfielder is a MOF defender, adept at tracking the ball with pace/tempo; accelerated forward from a H 3/4 slot (78MPH). For the finale, the righty touched 81MPH FB in the zone, mixing a sharply spun 68-69MPH CB at 2375rpms, and killed mid-70's CH. What to Improve: Offensively, there's more power to tap into from the backside drive leg. Additional depth behind the ball would allow for timing adjustments and an overall strengthened EV output. Did give a glimpse of early shoulder rotation, but the raw athleticism will always put him in position to win. His longer arm-action suggests a velo jump positionally, and on the mound with room to pull down release from top-to-bottom. Synopsis: Just looking at the body and delivery, there's future projection to pitch, as lean muscle packs on. It's free and easy for strikes mostly, and the front side maintains direction. The twitchy/bursty actions transfer well to the baseball diamond and should give him a chance at the top of the order with ability to effect the game with speed. Video: February 21, 2023.
