Recruiting Board: Marist College

Dan Cevette
President, New York

The new Feature 'Recruiting Board' takes a deeper look into the players currently committed (or 2018 graduates recently signed this past November) to New York colleges.  We will only focus on players that have attended PBR events, as these are the prospects we are most comfortable discussing and projecting.

We will be completing player descriptions in addition to forecasting players potential impact at the college level and what that could mean for the college program. This article is for all the fans and enthusiast of the game, players, families, college programs, alumni, and future prospective student athletes.

** Players below are, to the best of our knowledge, committed to the program listed below. These are solely our opinions with absolutely no input from the college's baseball staff. Commitments are always subject to change.

Marist College

NCAA D1
METRO ATLANTIC

Our last Recruiting Board dove into the future of the Jaspers and the Manhattan College baseball program. This week we hone in on the player's in our system already signed/committed to Marist College. Currently the Red Foxes 10-year head coach Chris Tracz sits with four PBR NY alumni commitments, all four hoping to make positive impacts once they arrive on campus. Two of the prospects are from the 2018 class and two from the 2019 class respectively. The theme is consistent - Raw and really athletic.

Brian Hart OF / LHP / Saratoga Springs, NY / 2018

I have been doing this in New York now for just over four years. I have seen the likes of Zach Sullivan, Garret Whitley, Leugim Castillo, and Quentin Holmes all while traveling this enormous state. Those player's mentioned above, although each have their own unique skill-set, they all share a few similar baseball traits. High level speed and a northeast projectable bat that are now playing professional baseball. Enter Brian Hart. Marist hit a grand-slam in the College World Series with the commitment and signing of Hart. One-of-the, if not the most athletic player's in the 2018 class, Hart brings lanky lean size with high octane speed, easy power with the bat from the left-side, and the ability to eat up some meaningful innings on the mound. The impact Hart makes for Marist will be felt the minute he steps on the field this upcoming fall. BOLD PREDICTION: Hart starts three years in the OF for the Red Foxes before being drafted into professional baseball following the completion of his junior year.

Erubiel Candelario RHP / 3B / Kipp College Prep, NY / 2018

If signing Brian Hart was a grand slam in the College World Series, then the commitment and signing of Erubiel Candelario was a base clearing triple. I first saw Candelario back in Sept. of 2016 at our ENY All-Star Games. He worked out from 3B showing easy actions and a plus arm from the corner, and his bat shows raw power with a fluid, repeatable swing path. Then he took the mound and my attention he caught. The arm is clean, loose with a long arm-swing. High energy tempo, full stride and releases from a high 3/4 slot. Fastball sits 86-87 mph and there's no doubt more to come, his best secondary offering is the change up, which sits in the upper 70's with FB hand-speed and fade. Curveball humps early in the mid 70's, it's a pitch he will need to tighten up. BOLD PREDICTION: Candelario competes this fall for meaningful innings as a freshman. When the dust settles, he's playing professional baseball.

Isaac Brown RHP / SS / Troy, NY / 2019

A very solid commitment for Marist, keeping the trend Brown stands an athletic 6-foot-2, 180-pounds with a frame able to hold more weight as he physically matures.  Delivery is up-tempo, creates a long stride, clean long arm-action, fastball currently 84-85 peaking 86 mph with late action.  Appears to use more of a slider type breaking ball, firm at 73-75 with tight spin, quick 11/5 shape. Changeup stays to the arm-side with gradual fade. Another raw athletic pitching prospect off the board in NY, should be able to compete as he is still two years away from stepping on campus. BOLD PREDICTION: Back-end bullpen man for Marist once he gets acclimated to college life. That long arm-swing will produce fastballs over the 90 mph mark, and his slider will be his go-to out pitch.

Trey Cruz 2B / 3B / Salesian, NY / 2019

Cruz attended our Sept. 17 ENY All-Star Games at Marist College and verbally committed to the Red Foxes not long after. He obviously made an impact on their coaching staff, but he also made one on my scouting staff that day. I like the size, and again, very lean and athletic, no doubt he will fill into that 6-foot-1 frame. Watching his BP was a separator for me. He's loose and fluid from the left-side, its a repeatable swing on a slightly lifted plane. There's bat whip through contact and I think there's more power to come from Cruz as he continues to physically grow. Defensively the hands and glove are developed, the footwork however is still raw. Quick and clean release and current arm-strength projects to be average. BOLD PREDICTION: Cruz is two year's away from anything meaningful at Marist, don't be surprised if that 165-pound frame climbs to 190 and Cruz is dropping deep-flys with an improved bat. 2B is the place we see him in the future.
