Recruiting Board: Manhattan College

The new Feature 'Recruiting Board' takes a deeper look into the players currently committed (or 2018 graduates recently signed this past November) to New York colleges. We will only focus on players that have attended PBR events, as these are the prospects we are most comfortable discussing and projecting.
We will be completing player descriptions in addition to forecasting players potential impact at the college level and what that could mean for the college program. This article is for all the fans and enthusiast of the game, players, families, college programs, alumni, and future prospective student athletes.

Last week we dove into the future of the Golden Griffs and the Canisius College baseball program. This week we venture more than 400 miles southeast as we forecast the committed player's coming into the Manhattan baseball program. Currently the Jaspers first-year head coach Mike Cole sits with four PBR NY alumni commitments, all four hoping to make positive impacts for the program next fall. All four are prospects from the 2018 class. Let's take a deeper look.

Lewis Clarke OF / Saratoga Springs , NY / 2018Rankings StateRank: 61 / POS: 9
No stranger to PBR NY, Clarke has been to five events over his HS career. One thing has always stood out to me when referencing Clarke, and that would be the phrase raw-athlete. He stands 5-foot-11, close to 180-pounds, he's strong, physical and runs well (6.90 60 yard dash). He shows rhythm at the plate, with some bat-speed, mostly pull-side juice. There's balance in the OF, a serviceable arm with carry, and covers ground with natural instincts. We really like Clarke and once he gets into a college program we think Manhattan will too. Projection stays in the OF at the next-level. |

Davey Moffett 1B / OF / Vernon-Verona-Sherrill, NY / 2018Rankings StateRank: 28 / POS: 3
Another PBR NY veteran, Moffett has been to four events over his HS career. Large frame at 6-foot-5, 210-pounds and looks more like 230. Hits from a wide stance and shows premium bat-speed and strength, especially to his pull-side. Have witnessed him square up high-end pitching with authority, his bat will definitely bring a power presence to the Jaspers lineup once fully acclimated to college life. Projects as strictly a 1B/DH type of player at the next-level. |

Mason Vaughan 1B / 3B / Seton Catholic Central, NY / 2018Rankings StateRank: 91 / POS: 7
Vaughan stands a thick 6-foot-2, 220-pounds and plays both corner positions. The bat is powerful, showing high-end bat-speed (96 mph off a tee) with a consistent level bat plane. There's power projection with the bat, that's pretty clear to anyone who has watched Vaughan play. Defensively, another corner guy for the Jaspers 2018 recruiting class, from 3rd he's active for his size and the glove and hands are soft. He plays 1B as well moving smooth around the bag, I see him at 3rd however long-term. Vaughan does pitch for his HS team, and reports are all positive but we are guessing his impact for Manhattan will be with the bat. Projects at 3B. |

Howard Sewell 1B / LHP / Middletown, NY / 2018Rankings StateRank: 77 / POS: 6
Our sleeper pick is Howard Sewell, an athletic lanky LHP/1B/OF who attends Middletown HS. On the mound there's clear projection, and although the velo hasn't been high-end the two times we have seen him, there's looseness in the arm-circle and the fastball is an easy 78-82 mph. The fastball shows depth and arm-side run, curveball has back-door shape, something he is working on making more consistent. We have seen his change-up used in leverage counts with confidence. I am fairly confident there's more to come on the mound from Sewell. Although Sewell was recruited mostly as a PO, he's a clear wildcard as a dual-threat for the Jaspers. For one, he's lanky at 6-foot-2, 190-pounds and runs well (7.0 60 yard dash) showing off some natural athleticism. I've seen him in person two different occasions during BP and I always left thinking he has the bat-path and looseness to hit at the next-level. It's not wimpy either, there's some easy bat-speed, and he attacks the ball out in front of the plate, something I always take note of. Defensively he moves around 1B with ease giving me the impression he could handle 1B or OF at the next-level. Wherever he ends up, I have a feeling the Jaspers will be very happy with the production. |
