Scouting Report On Nickerson
Sean Nickerson RHP/OF (Horseheads HS, NY 2015)
Nickerson stands 6-foot-0 170 pounds and has a nice loose arm. His fastball topped 84 mph sitting 81-83 with late down action. He spins a nice 12/6 shape curveball at 70 mph for strikes. He rushes at times and ball stays up and flat, but when he is slower and relaxed the ball comes out with life down in the zone.
OF/Hitting - Nickerson looks very comfortable in the outfield with good instincts and movements. His arm works free and easy with nice carry on the ball. Swinging the bat he has some good hand speed with an 83 mph exit tee velocity. His swing is a touch long but he gets to the bat to the zone on a level plane.
Thoughts
I really liked Nickerson's baseball actions and his arm works free and easy. He has a bad habit opening up his front hip when he throws and he looses a few ticks on the radar gun because of that. Once he figures that out defensively he is a next level OF. His bat still needs work and he has a long swing so I worry velocity would beat him in, if he can make that adjustment he could be a two-way guy for a program next year.
From a pitching standpoint there's a lot to like about Nickerson. His arm is clean and has some velocity topping 84 mph. I think with a serious arm program and fixing that hip that opens up early he could easily be 85+ his senior year. He has a good feel for spin which you can't teach and with the right coaching should develop a much needed changeup. Right now he's a very exciting 'under the radar' prospect on the mound. I look forward to following his progress.
