New York State Games Preview: Hudson Valley Region

Hudson Valley Manager Jared Carrier has put together a 20-man mixed bag roster of players from all Eastern New York and Binghamton, as well as from the states of New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Connecticut, to compete in Prep Baseball Report’s 2016 New York State Games.

Carrier has been involved with Prep Baseball Report for two years, both coaching and taking on social media responsibilities.

Hudson Valley is set to feature a versatile middle infield. Chris Reed (2017), who doubles a pitcher, will get the nod at second base. Joining him up the middle at shortstop will be his high school teammate from Millbrook Prep, Colby Dunlop (2017), who pitches as well. Also in the mix at second base will be Ross Bartziokas (2017).

“He’s got a steady glove and a compact swing,” said Carrier on Bartziokas’ tools. “He is someone I will have at the top of the lineup. Probably in the two slot.”

At first base will be Trevor Herter (2017), another versatile player who will also spend some innings behind the plate. Herter, a 6-foot-4, 200 pound junior was a teammate of Reed and Dunlop at Millbrook. Carrier is excited for his presence, as his size and skill make him a defensive plus at first base and catcher, and a force in the middle of the batting order.

“He’s a big-frame kid with some pop to his pull side,” said Carrier. “He moves well around the bag, and he’s a great target.”

Across the diamond at third base will be T.J. Gregory, (2018) from Chester High School, a program that went 14-7, and 9-0 in Section IX Class C. “He’s a lanky left-handed hitter,” said Carrier of his 6-foot, 165-pound occupant of the hot corner. Gregory will not only display his strong arm at third base but on the mound as well. According to Carrier, his fastball touches 80 MPH.

Covering the real estate in the outfield will be Brandon Chavarria (2017), from Roy C. Ketcham High School, who will most likely see time in centerfield. “He’s got an accurate arm and is a line-drive hitter,” he said of his outfielder. “He’s a nice all-around player.”

Patrick Galer (2017) from Whitesboro High School will be joining Chavarria in the outfield. Galer is a left-hander, who will also see some time on the mound, given his arm strength. Galer scored 16 runs and recorded nine hits, and made six appearances on the mound for a 2.75 ERA this season.

Skyler Ohrvall (2017) from John Jay High School will round out the outfield. At 5-foot-9, 165 pounds, Carrier described him as, “A compact, strong looking player with an accurate arm.” Ohrvall hit .400 and drove in four runs this season.

Carrier plans on platooning his three catchers: Herter, Ben Avila (2018) from Valley Central High School and Antonio Fisher (2017) from Hudson High School.

“He’s probably our best catch-and-throw guy,” Carrier said of Fisher. “He has a sub-2.0 pop time, and is a good receiver.”

Carrier says he plans on each catcher going about two innings, or catch one pitcher every game.

A couple arms tossing to said backstops will be Matthew Herasme (2018) from Don Bosco Prep in New Jersey, who is scheduled to pitch the first three innings of the tournament for Hudson Valley. Ryan Murphy (2017), another player from Ketcham, will also be pitching for Coach Carrier. He says Murphy has an 82-84 MPH fastball with an above-average breaking ball.

Carrier also pointed out a 6-foot-3, 180-pound freshman, Andrew Carroll (2019) from Honesdale High School, as one of the highlights of his staff. “I’ve seen him up to 83 MPH,” Carrier said. “He’s raw, but he’s got to get out there and in front of these coaches.”
