2018 Spring Scout Blog (Week 1)

2018 1B Jordy Batista (James Monroe)
Physical corner infielder who hits from the left side; righty throw. Stays compact with swing path from a balanced setup; hands stay inside contact. Drove an oppo single off an 85 MPH FB and was able to punch one through the right side as well for a 2-run single. VIDEO:

2018 SS Samuel De La Cruz (James Monroe)
Athletic frame; fast twitch actions up the middle with above average arm (up to 90 MPH across the diamond in past). The RHH had 2 walks and a go-ahead RBI single; short compact stroke, stays behind the ball. VIDEO:


2020 RHP Christopher Mendez (James Monroe)
Slight build with long arms; low ¾ slot. Worked FB down and to glove side at 80-81 MPH. Secondary stuff lacked feel on a bitter cold/windy morning; guided breaking ball at 62-66 MPH.

2018 RHP Daniel Garcia (James Monroe)
Athletic build with strong lower half. Arm works from a low ¾ slot sitting 80-81 MPH; some depth to CB with 10-4 action at 68-70 MPH.

2019 RHP Edward Urena (James Monroe)
Lean frame; low arm ¾ arm slot. Came out of the pen to help hold the Beacon School as Monroe came back for the 5-4 win. Sat 81-83, touching 84 MPH in his 2 IP. Above average front hip, late action CB at 64-66 MPH; locked up several RHH. Showed a change at 74 MPH.

2018 RHP/1B William Gilbert (The Beacon School / Cornell Commit)
Long frame in the 6-foot-2 range; athletic. Worked in the 83-85 MPH range from a standard ¾ arm slot on a cool/blustery morning vs. James Monroe. Breaking ball works with tight rotation at 74-75 MPH while occasionally working a same plane change up in vs. LHH at 75 MPH. Delivery repeats, had some misses up in and out of the zone but plenty of upside present.

2018 INF Luca Lotito (The Beacon School / Pittsburgh Commit)
Athletic, rangy RHH SS in the 6-foot range with a right-center approach. Doubled and singled and made a play up the middle releasing from a submarine arm slot.

2021 2B/SS Reynaldo Angeles (Benjamin Cardozo)
Athletic R/R MIF with a slight frame that is hitting in the #3 hole as a freshman for a solid Cardozo squad. Easy effort stroke; repeats timing. VIDEO:

2018 RHP Mathew Miller (Benjamin Cardozo / LIU-Post Commit)
Ideal pitcher’s frame in the 6-foot-1 185 pound range. Sat low 80’s on a brisk afternoon. Able to work FB to both sides of the plate and rarely up in the zone. Spot and expanded with breaking ball.

2018 OF/LHP Brian Hart (Saratoga Springs / Marist Commit)
Drove in 2 with a bases loaded single, high end athlete with several premium tools. Runs well, power at the plate, strong arm. L/L.

2018 Jack Mahoney (Shaker / Stony Brook Commit)
Pitched 1 inning in relief- 84-86 MPH fastball, tight slider at 78 and change-up with fade at 75. Recorded 2 strike outs. Mahoney also homered at the plate.

2018 3B Brett Young (Albany Academy / VCU Commit)
2 singles, double and a 2-run homerun showing off his premium bat-speed. RHH continues to get better the more we see him. Also strong defender at the corner.

2021 C Derek Bender (Albany Academy)
Catching prospect had 3 hits on the day. Impressive bat-speed for his age, hit a homerun to his pull-side. Strong armed catcher, solid looking player.

2018 RHP Joe Kosowsky (Lansingburgh / FDU Commit)
Impressive velocity out the gate in April, 88-89 MPH fastball, upper 60's breaking ball with late depth. Did give up some solid contact. The arm is quick and clean, fastball worked on one plane. Aggressive approach, strong hard working athlete.
