Prep Baseball Report

Inside the Ranking: Top Five 2025 LHP's (NY/PA)

Dan Cevette
President, NY/PA

In conjunction with our National and State Rankings being updated and released we will start to roll out more website content regarding the state rankings and a deeper dive into some of the players. Pennsylvania and New York are both talent rich states and there is no service out there today that is scouting, covering, and reporting on more players than the Prep Baseball Report.

TOP FIVE 2025 LHP's (NY/PA)

David Shields LHP / OF / Mt. Lebanon, PA / 2025

Coming in at the No. 1 LHP (in NY/PA '25 class) is Miami commitment David Shields. Shields stands 6-foot-1, 185-pounds with broad shoulders and an athletic build. Currently he flashes a next-level three pitch mix highlighted by his upper 80's FB (88T). His CB has tight rotation with under the barrel depth while his change-up shows arm-side fade, both compliment his FB well. All three pitches come from a repeatable delivery, full arm-swing, and a 3/4 power slot. Expect to see the FB velocity continue to climb over the next few years. The ceiling is lofty for the Western PA lefty.

Tyler Maddix LHP / OF / Bishop Canevin, PA / 2025

Another Western PA southpaw to keep closes eyes on is my No. 2 LHP (in NY/PA '25 class) Tyler Maddix. Maddix frame has room to lengthen out and add weight standing 6-foot-0, 160-pounds. The arm-swing works cleanly, especially on the extension part of his front-side, it's fast with no restrictions. The arm-slot is just slightly above a high 3/4 and his FB (82 max) naturally has arm-side run / dive (spin is 2100). Velocity is good enough right now and his ceiling is high. There's already signs of spinning the baseball which is something I have always felt couldn't be taught. Fun player to continue to watch develop.

Jackson Walsh LHP / OF / North Allegheny, PA / 2025

The Western Pennsylvania theme continues with my No. 3 LHP (in NY/PA '25 class) Jackson Walsh. Walsh stands 5-11, 165-pounds with room to fill out and add weight. Clean repeatable delivery that shows tempo, arm-swing is fluid from a high 3/4 slot. FB peaked this summer (PBR event) at 83 mph and all signs point to that number jumping. I was really impressed with his feel for spin on his breaking pitch. Late depth from that offering with 2/7 shape.

Ty Corey LHP / 1B / John C. Birdlebough, NY / 2025

Central New York native Ty Corey comes in at No. 4 in my top five LHP's (in NY/PA '25 class). Imposing frame standing 6-foot-2, 190-pounds and there's still time for more growth. He starts with a belt high knee lift, compact delivery, some pace to it with tempo, shorter arm-swing in the back from a high arm-slot. He's working with his best stuff when the FB is down and running to his arm-side (80-81 - 1800 spin). His curveball has 12/7 shape sitting in the mid-upper 60s.

Todd Feurtado III LHP / OF / St. Mary's , NY / 2025

Todd Feurtado III finishes off my top five LHP's (in NY/PA '25 class). The dual player talent was impressive back in the preseason, especially with his potential from the mound. Standing 5-foot-11, 170-pounds Feurtado's frame is wiry and lean with room to add weight. Simple pace to his delivery, deceptive release point as it appears over-the-top but it's mostly due to his upper body tilt towards the 3rd base side. His FB sat low 80's back in the winter and his CB has potential to be a big-time pitch - hand-speed and depth were both advanced. Excited to see Feurtado's progress this fall or winter as his athleticism should allow him to climb the ladder.
