Day 1: Rochester Baseball Classic
July 7, 2017
15U Seneca All Stars 12 Turf Time 0
Hunter Kendall allowed just three hits over four shutout innings as the Seneca All Stars scored early and often. Commanding a fastball at 72-73 MPH, the 6-foot-3 Kendall struck out three and walked one for the win. The right-hander threw an economic 52 pitches – 35 for strikes. Working both sides of the plate, Kendall effectively changed eye levels and consistently induced weak contact throughout the contest. Quinn Hanafin and Tommy Kane combined for four hits, seven RBI and three runs scored to lead the offense. Kane capped a three-run first with a two-out, two-run double. Hanafin sparked a five-run third with a double to straight center that plated Zac Judson and Garrett Stuckey on the play. It was the first of two doubles on the day from the Seneca third baseman. Judson, Stuckey, Hanafin and Chris Mattoon scored two runs apiece. Logan Peters doubled home a run in the fourth inning. Tanner Frank led the Turf Time third with a base hit. One out later, Brennon Wilcox singled to left field, but Turf Time could not capitalize.
15U Rochester Cougars 9 Tri-City Aces 0
Ethan Putney hurled a three-hitter as the Rochester Cougars grabbed an early lead and never looked back. Putney struck out five and walked two for the win. The right-hander recovered from allowing some hard contact early and retired six straight and eight of nine from the third inning into the sixth. The right-hander showed a fastball that sat 73-74 MPH, but was at his best with a tight 2-to-7 curveball at 64 MPH. Putney uses his 6-foot build to get effective downward plane. Nick Kuhn drove in a run with a flare to left center in the first as the Cougars jumped to a 2-0 edge. Collin Miller and DJ White rapped back-to-back two-out doubles in the third to extend the lead. Miller plated Nick Bovee with a single to center in the third, and Putney helped his own cause when he drove in Ross Janezic with a base hit in the fifth. Jaden Nelomes put the game out of reach with a two-run home run to left center in the seventh.
15U Rochester Cougars 9 Baldwinsville Swarm 7
DJ White hurled four-plus solid innings, and the Cougars held on to beat Baldwinsville. White allowed four runs on five hits over 4.2 innings. The left-hander settled down after issuing three walks in the first. Rochester sent 11 to the plate in a decisive five-run second. Ryan Rivera finished 2-for-3 with a walk and three runs scored including a single to center that was mishandled allowing Jaden Nelomes and Nick Kuhn to score on the play. Noah Bowens brought home Rivera with a safety squeeze, and Ethan Putney capped the frame with an RBI base hit. Bowens plated a run with a single through the right side of the infield, and Justin Kuebel made it a 9-3 game in the fifth with an RBI ground out. Baldwinsville’s Jeb Farneth collected two hits, a run scored and two RBI including a sacrifice fly in the sixth as the Swarm pushed across three runs to cut the margin to two. Pat Anson walked twice and singled home a run in the Baldwinsville sixth. Kuhn finished 2-for-2 with two walks, a run scored and a stolen base for Rochester. Nelomes was 1-for2 with two walks and two runs scored.
