Class of 2024 Inside the Rankings: Up Next
February 2, 2022
Each week leading up to the new year, we'll be rolling out Inside the Rankings articles to further highlight the movement around the ‘24 classes in NY and PA. This week’s focus shifts the scope to “Up Next,” a Sophomore with a chance to rise.
2024 UTIL/rhp JASON PIPHER (wAVERLY)
The Spin: A true three-sport standout athlete with an advanced feel for the game, Pipher secured a Sportscenter Top-10 catch on the Gridiron back in November that inevitably rose to the #1 overall spot. On the baseball diamond, the Waverly product profiles as a legitimate utility player, able to handle middle infield and catching duties smoothly in a compact, athletic 5-foot-9, 160lb frame. An 81 mph arm-strength gives some hope that he’ll stick on the left side with the pace and internal clock to do so, and a quick-triggered move from the crouch supplies more than enough traction behind the plate if that’s where he ultimately ends up. Offensively, the left-handed hitter has a chance to be a dynamic top of the order bat with minimal in-game swing/miss and a 95% on-plane. A short, efficient barrel turn creates consistent palm-up, palm-down positioning at impact, allowing him to stay through the zone for an extended period of time. We saw the tough, grind it out nature of his at-bats firsthand this summer at multiple PBRT’s, starting to develop into a more physical, extra-base oriented attack (26 G’s rotational acceleration).
The Performance: 2/15/21, Preseason All-State Southern Tier | Impressed during a standout batting practice round, displaying 26 G’s of rotational acceleration, a 91% sweet spot, 91% line drive rate, and 80 mph average exit velocity. Turned around and popped a 2.00 best from the crouch and threw 81 mph across the diamond from SS during a clean defensive look.
One of the best rounds of the day came from 2024 SS Jason Pipher (Waverly); advanced barrel control for his age working line drives around the park. Physical gains will have reaching out to the gaps. #beseen pic.twitter.com/r0JuFIVZPL
