Week 8 (May 21- May 27, 2018)
2018 RHP Anthony Van Fossen (Union Endicott / Oswego Commit)
In the first game of a 3 games series to decide the section 4 Class A title, the 6-foot-2 175 pound senior (R/R) started for Union Endicott and played first base in the 7th inning. Van Fossen faced 26 batters through 6 full innings of work, yielding 4 hits, 1 R, 0 ER, 4 K, and 2 BB. His fastball was 82-84. His curve was at 66-67. He threw 94 pitches and 59 for strikes.
2018 RHP Shane Hammond (Union Endicott)
In the second game of a 3 game series to decide the section 4 Class A title, The senior (R/R) senior threw a complete game and faced 32 batters, scatting 6 H, 1 2B, 3 R, 2 ER, 5 K, and 2 BB. Hammond’s fastball was 82-84 and curve was at 70-71. A strong performance for Hammond who pitched the last 3 innings with a blistered fingered. At the plate, Hammond was 1 for 5, 1 K, 1 R.
2019 RHP Kyle Taborne (Vestal)
In the first game of a 3 games series to decide the section 4 Class A title, Taborne had his toughest outing of the year working into deep counts and ultimately issuing a handful of walks. His velocity was the best it’s been all spring with his fastball running 86-87, topping out at 88 MPH with his curve at 64 and change at 72.
2019 CF/RHP Shawn Chermak (Vestal)
In the second game of a 3 game series to decide the section 4 Class A title, Chermak (R/R) started for Vestal, going 3 innings, scattering 3 hits, 4 R, and 3 ER, against a strong Union Endicott team. He threw 76 pitches, 48 for strikes and had 5 K, 3 BB, and 2 HB. Chermak used a fastball that ran 79-81 and a curveball that was consistently 66-67. At the plate in the two games, Chermak was 3 for 5 with 3 RBI.
2018 RHP Matthew Arthur (Vestal)
Across two games of relief pitching in the 3 games series to decide the section 4 Class A title, the 5-foot-11 155 pound Vestal senior (R/R) threw 6 ⅔ innings. He faced 32 batters, yielding 7 hits, 1 R, 1 ER, 6 K, and 2 HB. His fastball was 79-80. His curve was at 66-67. He threw 105 pitches and 67 for strikes.
2018 SS Mason Ryan (Union Endicott / Elmira College Commit)
In 2 games of work at shortstop, Ryan (R/R) was 4 for 6, 3 R, 5 RBI, 2 BB, and 1 HP Batting in the 3 and 2 spots, Ryan accounted for 8 of UEs 14 runs in the series. He made several nice snags charging short hop ground balls at SS to gun out runners at first in the 2nd game.
2018 2B Matthew Carr (Vestal)
Over 2 games the 5-foot-10 165 pound second baseman was 3 for 8 with 1 2B, 1 R, 2 K. At 2B, Carr (R/R) had 3 putouts and 3 assists.
2019 OF Ivan Massari (West 50th St. Campus)
Athletic, lean frame for the L/L outfielder. Slash and burn approach at the plate dropping a bunt for a hit in first AB and also showing later on. Drove a triple to right-center late in the game showing quick wrists, exploding through the ball. Above average arm with carry. Prototypical leadoff/CF combo.
2019 1B Juan Maldonado (West 50th St. Campus)
6-foot-2 L/R 1B with a sweeping pull side approach at the plate. Sets up from a closed, spread stance. Stays in the zone post contact with some lift. Two hard hit singles vs. Luperon in the PSAL playoffs in the cleanup spot for the Seahawks.
2019 OF/LHP Richard Vasquez (Gregorio Luperon)
Slight, wiry frame with some fast twitch actions. Offensively knows the zone; quick middle in smoking a double after grinding out 2 walks early in the game. Front line arm on the mound sitting 83-85 MPH with an easy repeatable delivery from a ¾ slot. Sets up extreme arm side and features a big 2-to-8 breaking ball in the in the upper 60’s. Tough assignment for left-handed hitters.

2019 Nazier Mendez (Gregorio Luperon)
Full bodied LHH with a strong/thick lower half. Sets up open and showed some serious bat speed. Well struck fly out to RF, line out to RF and a hard hit 1B from the 3 hole of the Generals lineup.
2018 Wilfred Velasquez (Gregorio Luperon)
Athletic, muscular build for the lone senior on the Luperon roster. Showed some bat speed and lift from the right side of the plate; RBI double and solid contact in his ABs.
2019 Henry Pena Mercedez (Gregorio Luperon)
Physical frame in the 6-foot range for the RHH; plus athleticism. 3-for-4 on the day with a double and 3 RBI; swings with intent and gets to the zone in a hurry. Strong player that will be a force with continued game experience.
2020 RHP Jose Felix (Gregorio Luperon)
Athletic build; average frame. Works from a ¾ slot; FB features some cut in the 84-86 MPH range, touching one off at 87 MPH. Slider/Slurve like feel to breaking ball at 72-73 MPH. Command wavered at times but huge upside for the sophomore.

2020 RHP Claudio Rodriguez (Gregorio Luperon)
Lean, wiry build with a low ¾ slot. Easy effort delivery, repeats actions and stays down in the zone at 76-78 MPH with a lateral action slider. Composed on the mound; actions and frame scream projectability.
2018 2B Justin Pangburn (Columbia)
Blue Devils leadoff man picked up his first HR of the season with a blast over the left field wall to put the game out of reach in the sectional semi-finals versus Colonie. Solid hitter and run producer for Columbia. He will be a key factor in the Section II championship game as when he gets on base, he generally scores.
2019 C Jake Manderson (Ballston Spa/Stony Brook Commit)
The 6-foot-1, 170 pound RHH had a semi-final day to remember. Belted two HR’s while going 3 for 3 with 6 RBI’s in the win over the Plainsmen. Effective load with appropriate pre-pitch movement, quick to the ball, repeatable motion. Behind the dish, managed the game well and showed soft hands while receiving the ball. Fun player to watch as he has room to continue to fill out his athletic frame.
2019 RHP/SS Luke Gold (Ballston Spa/Stony Brook Commit)
Normally the starting SS for the Scotties, took the mound and threw 7 quality innings while striking out 4 batters. The 6-foot-1, RHP/SS showed senior leadership and poise on the bump. He kept the Plainsmen off balance all night and induced 2 double plays.
2018 LHP Connor Houle (Waterford / Franklin Pierce Commit)
The delivery is online and the slot is above 3/4. The fastball sat 81-83 mph, minimal arm side run to it. The spin pitch is a slider at 72-73 mph. The changeup is 74-75 mph with fade. Strike thrower who is around the plate often
2019 OF Thomas Phelan (Waterford)
Small is stature but showed quick hands at the plate and good athleticism in the outfield. The foot speed is above average. The ability to spray the ball over the field was shown throughout the game.
2019 3B Mike Castracani (Waterford)
Aggressive player, the set up at the plate is wide and the swing works. Strength in the frame is needed. Moves well around the bases. The glove is solid at third and he shows the ability to range to the 6-hole. Arm is clean and needs additional strength added to it.
2019 OF, Isaiah Logan (Canojaharie)
Athletic player, the movements are legit and he moves well in CF. The bat has strength and life to it. The bat path needs to be shortened and smoothed out. Good looking player.
2018 1B Anthony Fontana (Wantagh / Furman Commit)
6-3, 225lb First baseman. Large frame with an athletic build, Furman Commit. Pro power at the plate. Slightly crouched stance, with medium leg kick for timing. Above average bat speed, quick hands and above average hip rotation. Average in the field, average on the basepaths with room for improvement.
2018 LHP/1B Patrick Willix (Wantagh / Molloy Commit)
6-foot-2, 200 pound frame with athletic build. Extra weight would be beneficial for added power/velocity. Has a long, hitchy arm action. Above average lower half use/drive. Saw the makings of a 4 pitch mix (FB, CB, CH, SL), but was much more reliant on his FB & CB. FB was in the low 80’s with some movement. CB has great depth, but inconsistent. Above average SL at points. Plus Power with at the plate an slightly opened stance. Quiet stide with good weight transfer and hip rotation.

2018 SS Anthony D’Onofrio (Wantagh / Hofstra Commit)
5-foot-9, 175 pound frame with athletic build. Fast twitch all over the field. Seen lots of improvement in the last couple years. Above average bat speed with very quick hands. Great bat control, with very low k-rate. Can hit the ball to all fields. Above average glove and throwing arm.
2019 RHP/SS Mason McLane (Wantagh)
5-foot-11, 175 pound RHP and shortstop. Average frame with very athletic build. Has the frame to add more weight. High potential, still very raw. Above average bat speed, with a slight hitch in his load. Quick hands, fast twitch in the field. Above average arm strength across the diamond. Repeatable mechanics on the mound. Pounds the strike zone consistently. Tends to short arm his pitches, but has a very quick arm action that makes up for lost momentum. Average use of his push off leg, with a below average finish (stiff front leg).
2018 LHP Robert Lucano (Garden City / Hofstra Commit)
6-foot-1, 190 pound frame, with athletic build. Frame can use added weight for extra explosiveness. Intelligent pitcher on the mound (knows how to pitch). High leg kick, with great direction and amazing extension. Slight dip and dive with back leg. Good arm action, and great feel for 2 pitches. Was able to command his low 80’s FB to both sides of the plate, and get his Breaking Ball over for strikes and putaway pitches. Big Potential.
2018 SS/RHP Jordi Agosto (East)
Slick-fielding shortstop with a high baseball IQ. Defensively - high-level instincts, reads the ball well off the bat, soft hands, sure glove, smooth transfer to accurate and strong throwing arm, impressive range, rarely seems off-balance and when he is he, quickly and easily regains composure. Offensively - short to the ball, uses all fields, consistently makes barrel contact, makes in at-bat adjustments, shortens up in two-strike counts, combines footspeed with intelligent baserunning, will take the extra base when the least bit of a window opens.
2018 RHPJoel Alicea (East)
RHP who pounds the strike zone, effectively changes eye level with a fastball that he can move in and out, late movement makes it difficult for batters to time, confident with an 11-to-5 curveball that he can use as his out pitch.
2019 C Tyrone Roundtree (East)
Sturdily-built catcher with above average receiving skills, lets the ball get deep, sure glove, impressive blocking skills, nimble behind the plate, makes quick transfer to throwing hand, confident and accurate arm, displays leadership skills behind the plate, developing his understanding of how to call a game. Offensively - above average plate coverage, disciplined in the batter’s box, gap-to-gap power, keeps bat on level path through the strike zone, makes consistent barrel contact.
2020 OF Angel Silva (East)
Solidly-built corner outfielder; Offensively - collects quality at-bats, can attack early and make adjustments late in the count, uses all fields, strong and quick hands allow him to turn on the inside fastball, at the same time he can drive a ball into the middle third, still developing. Defensively - gets good jumps off the bat, takes intelligent lines to the ball, sure glove, developing arm.
2019 2B Alex Figueroa (East)
Slightly-built middle infielder; Offensively - good contact hitter who will develop as his body matures, can take an inside pitch down the line and drive a ball out over the plate to middle, some foot speed which makes him a difficult out and threat on the bases. Defensively - sure glove, smooth and agile movements, makes quick transition to throwing hand, has an accurate and developing arm.
2018 2B Frankie Santiago (Franklin)
Speedy middle infielder. Offensively - broke the Section V record for stolen bases, has learned to read pick-off moves and understands how to get a good jump,, impressive blend of athleticism and baserunning ability, contact hitter who routinely goes with the pitch, shows pop with his bat; Defensively - underrated fielder, soft hands, smooth and easy transfer, quick and agile movements, accurate arm.
2019 SS Julian Cotto (Franklin)
Impressive shortstop with elite-level range. Defensively - few rivals when it comes to his jump on the ball, quick first step, strong instincts, smooth and agile movements, soft hands, gets to balls that few can, capable of making throw to first from the outfield grass after making backhanded stab in hole between short and third; Offensively - contact hitter, uses all fields, make adjustments during at-bats.
2020 RHP Nomar Quinones (Franklin)
RHP with a strong arm, quick to the plate with upper 70s fastball that he uses to change the eye level of opposing hitters, comfortable working both sides of the plate, shows confidence in an 11-to-5 curveball that he uses in a variety of counts, intriguing prospect especially as he adds another pitch to his arsenal.
2018 C Ernesto Perez (Monroe High)
Sturdy catcher with an impressive bat. Offensively - short to the ball, keeps bat on a level path through the strike zone, keeps hands back and capable of driving the ball to all fields with strong hands, shows speed on the base paths; Defensively - above average receiver with a strong and accurate arm, fluid movements behind the plate with a quick release.
2019 Gregory Romero RHP (Monroe High)
RHP with crippling 12 to 6 curveball, shows confidence to throw breaking ball in any and all counts, can use it for a first-pitch strike and to expand the zone, counters it with a fastball which slows late action; Offensively - tremendous plate discipline, he can slap the ball to all fields and draws walks, can be effectively used in hit-and-run situations.
