Uncommitted Upperclass: Outfield Analysis

The Uncommitted Upperclass Showcase featured an outfield group rich in high ceiling prospects, highlighted by Santino Panaro, an elite level athlete who committed to UNLV shortly after the completion of the event, and Max Leuga, who had an impressive round of batting practice as well as an 87 mph outfield velocity. We break down these prospects and the rest of the talented group in the Outfield Analysis:
Jace Avina, OF/SS, Spanish Springs, 2021
6-foot-1, 170-pound frame, lean, athletic build, long limbs, wiry strong. Avina improved on his 60-time lowing it from 7.03 to 6.89 as well as improving his outfield velo from 86 to 87 mph. Defensively, quick first step, aggressive routes, quick exchange at midsection. Loose, quick arm action, high ¾ slot, accurate and carry; 87 mph OF velocity. At the plate, starts in an athletic, narrow stance. Slight bat wrap load, simple, short stride. Efficient, level bat path, high one-handed finish, good extension. Gap to gap approach drives ball to the big part of the yard, flashes of pop to the pull side; 82 mph exit velocity. A young prospect to keep an eye out for as he continues to progress in his all-around game.
Blake Barrett, OF/LHP, Faith Lutheran, 2021
5-foot-11, 170-pound frame, athletic, lean build, room to add size, proportion strength. A lefty-lefty prospect who showed confidence in the outfield, at the plate as well as on the mound. Defensively, aggressive routes, fluid footwork, belt high transfer. Quick, short arm action from the left side, pulls down from a high, ¾ slot, accuracy and carry; 81 mph OF velocity. Athleticism apparent in 7.24 60 time. At the plate, starts in an athletic, open stance, high hand rhythm. Slight arm bar load, short, quiet stride, balanced throughout. Level swing with excellent extension, high finish, sprays the ball to all fields, flashes of power towards the pull side; 83 mph exit velo.
Maklain Briggs, RHP/OF, Pine View (UT), 2020
5-foot-10, 155-pound two-way prospect, lean build, broad shoulders, room to develop physically. Defensively, comes through ball, quick transfer into quick, short arm cycle, high ¾ arm slot with carry, accuracy; 83 mph OF velo. 7.73 60-yard dash. At the plate, athletic, narrow stance. Concise hand rhythm, high leg kick, maintains balance throughout his swing. Stays on plane, lives mostly to the pull side, occasionally drove ball to left-center; 80 mph exit velo.
Daniel Clayton, OF/RHP, Basic, 2021
5-foot-11, 154-pound two-way athlete, athletic, tapered build with a strong lower half. This is an above average athlete with a cool confidence and tools to compliment his athleticism. Defensively, athletic first step, aggressively comes through the ball, exchanges at the midsection, long arm cycle, ¾ arm slot; 83 mph OF velo. Offensively, starts in an open, athletic stance, sinks into his load, high leg kick, maintains balance throughout, above average bat speed, level swing path, ability to drive the ball to all field with signs of power potential; 92 mph exit velo. 7.53 laser timed 60.
Derek DeSario, OF/2B, Durango, 2020
5-foot-10, 145-pound frame, lean, proportionate build, quick lateral athlete, under way runner, 7.27 60-yard dash. Defensively, fluidity coming through the ball, high transfer. Long, loose arm, ¾ arm slot; 72 mph OF velocity. Athleticism shown throughout, 7.27 60-yard dash. At the plate, starts in a wide, crouched stance. High hand load, shoulder high elbow, pick up, set down stride. Rotational swing that stays on plane with slight uppercut, balance throughout. Ability to spray the ball to all fields; 76 mph exit velo.
Cash Donovan, OF, Green Valley, 2021
5-foot-7, 185-pound frame, stocky, compact, strong proportionate build. Defensively, aggressive first step, fundamentally sound, high transfer, pulls down over high front side, over the top arm slot; 78 mph OF velocity. At the plate, starts in a tall, narrow stance, head high hand placement. Load that sinks into his legs, long, quiet stride, slight arm bar. On plane bat path, natural lift, excellent bat speed, quick hip action, high finish, 88 mph exit velo. 7.94 laser time 60.
Donovan Gladney, OF, Rancho, 2020
5-foot-8, 165-pound, strong, tapered build, broad shouldered in a compact frame. Immediately made his presence known with an event best, 6.72 60-yard dash. Quick twitch abilities carried directly over to his outfield session, aggressive routes. Fields in stride, quick exchange into his short arms cycle, carry and accuracy, over the top arm slot, 75 mph in August to 82 mph in November. Offensively, starts in a crouched set up, leading into a toe-tap load, slight dive into the ball, tends to land heavily on front foot. Compact swing stays on plane, mostly middle to pull side with flashes of pop; 81 mph exit velo. His above average athleticism and quick twitch abilities should be an interesting follow as he continues to develop.
Garrett Guy, OF/RHP, Sierra Vista, 2020
6-foot-1, 185-pound two-way athlete, developed, tapered build, proportionate strength. 7.22 60-yard dash. In the outfield, clean routes, high transfer. Short, quick arm cycle, ¾ arm slot with accuracy; 71 mph OF velo. At the plate, starts in a tall, athletic stance, vertical barrel. Sinks heavily into his back side, slight arm bar, barrel wrap load, medium-high leg kick, weight transfer into his front side, opens front side. Rotational swing, uphill bat plane, quick bat speed. Flashes of power to pull side; 88 mph exit velo.
Michael Inorio, OF, St. Augustine (AZ), 2020
5-foot-8, 155-pound frame, athletic build, sneaky strong lower half, room to develop strength. Used legs well both at the plate and in the field. Defensively, polished approach through balls, above average footwork, quick exchange, short, quick arm action, high ¾ arm slot, good carry; 80 mph OF velo. Offensively, spread, athletic set up, rapid hand rhythm, sinking load into a slight arm bar, short stride, bat on plane through his swing, high finish, stays in the middle of the field, power potential to the pull side; 80 mph exit velo. 7.47 60-yard dash, underway runner.
Maxwell Leuga, OF/C, Green Valley, 2020
6-foot-0, 190-pound frame, physical athlete, develop, athletic build, tapered with strong lower half, proportionate strength with strong forearms and hands. High ceiling prospect with above average tools, evident by his 6.85 60, had the best overall showing at the event. Offensively, starts in a spread, athletic stance, hands shoulder high with easy rhythm, subtle rhythm in legs. Early load, low hovering leg kick. Above average bat speed, efficient hand path, on plane swing with natural lift, quick hip action, one handed high extension. Gap to gap approach, drive the ball with authority, left the yard twice; 93 mph exit velocity. Defensively, polished mechanics through the ball, chest high exchange, strides on-line. Quick, loose arm action, high ¾ arm slot, accuracy and carry; 87 mph OF velocity.
Dylan Loret, OF/2B, Homeschool, 2021
5-foot-6, 125-pound utility position player, lean, youthful build. 7.73 60-yard dash. Defensively, aggressive through the ball, flashes of lateral quickness, raw athleticism. High exchange, accurate throws from infield/outfield; 64 mph OF velo, 60 mph IF velo. At the plate, tall stance, simple hand rhythm. Small leg kick and a slight hand drop, efficient hand path, slight uppercut swing, ability to hit the ball to all fields; 72 mph exit velo.
Santino Panaro, OF, Bishop Gorman, 2021
UNLV commit, 5-foot-9, 160-pound frame, tapered, athletic build, added 10 pounds since the State Games in August. An extremely athletic prospect uses his speed and quickness to enhance every part of his game. Defensively, his elite athleticism shines, above average first step, aggressively routes to cut ball off. Short, quick arm cycle from the left side, high ¾ slot with carry, accuracy; 81 mph OF velo. At the plate, starts with narrow, open stance, a high, slow hand rhythm, efficient path to the ball with advanced barrel awareness, sprays the ball to all fields, remains balanced throughout swing, flashes of power to the pull side; 88 mph exit velo.
Seth Parr, OF/2B, Arbor View, 2021
5-foot-11, 170-pound frame, physical athlete, stocky, athletic build, strong lower half. Defensively, he moved well in both the infield and the outfield, but the comfort was apparent in the infield. Small hop into set up, feel for forehand and backhand. Ability to change is arm slot, fluid actions, accurate; 74 mph IF velocity. At the plate, starts in a tall, athletic stance, rhythmic hand load, starts head high. Sinks into his load, small hanging leg kick, remains balanced. Drives the ball to all fields, consistent line drive contact, flashes of power to the pull side; 88 mph exit velo. 7.41 60-yard dash. A consistent middle of the order bat that projects to remain at 2B with his arm strength and actions up the middle.
Frankie Romano, OF/RHP, Coronado, 2021
5-foot-9, 165-pound frame, compact, stocky frame with a strong lower half. Defensively, clean routes, quick transfer. High ¾ arm slot, short, quick arm action; 73 mph OF velo. Offensively, starts in a balanced, athletic stance, high elbow, bat resting on his shoulder. Loads into a toe tap stride, short, repeated line drive swing. stays up the middle, flashes of potential power to pull side; 76 mph exit velo. Underway runner, 7.92 60-yard dash.
Diego Trujillo, 2B/OF, Laughlin, 2020
6-foot-0, 160-pound frame, lean, athletic build, room to add strength and size. Trujillo, a two-sport athlete, is a high ceiling prospect from small school prospect with raw above average tools starting with a 6.9 60 yard dash. Athletic set up, aggressive first step, fluid actions, midsection exchange. Over the top arm slot, loose, short arm cycle and good carry; event high 88 mph OF velo. At the plate, from the left side, starts in an athletic, open stance, high back elbow. Slight arm bar, toe tap load, small leg kick, on plane bat path, natural lift, excellent barrel awareness. Sprays the ball to all fields, flashes of pop to the pull side; 80 mph exit velo.
Jareyn Yamaguchi, OF, Slam Academy, 2020
5-foot-4, 125-pound outfielder, compact, tapered build. Scrappy player, quickness is his best tool was immediately apparent. 7.18 60-yard dash. a high effort outfielder, quick first step, aggressive routes. Quick, short arm action, on-line with accuracy and some carry; 79 mph OF velocity. At the plate, starts in a wide, slightly crouched base, hands shoulder high, smooth hand rhythm. Toe tap load and a short, slight uppercut swing. Uses the entire field, understands his game, stays on top of the ball; 71 mph exit velo.
