Scorpions Scout Day - Quick Hits

Buddy Gouldsmith
Nevada Scouting Director

SPARKS, NV - The Scorpios Scout Day weathered the storm. Participants from five classes worked to beat the thunderstorms at Reed High School. With 60 times complete on a damp track the rains began to fall as the defensive portion of the workout was underway. Following the defensive workout, scout day was moved inside to complete the batting practice, exit velocity, and pitching portion of the workout. Prospects from the 2020 thru the 2024 classes showcased their skill and are commended for their efforts. Below are some quick hits from the event.

2020

INF/C, Brock Griffin (Loyalton), 5-foot-9 150, Griffin maintains high level of athleticism with an unpolished skill set. Although he took ground balls at shortstop and worked out behind the dish, his raw athleticism may be better suited to the outfield at the next level.  At the plate, he has present strength in his barrel and the ball jumps off his bat with power potential.  He manages the length in his swing well and makes consistent hard contact with a mostly pull side approach.

2021

INF, Bryson Horton (McQueen), 6-foot-1, 160, Horton has an athletic build with room for weight and strength gains. His developing infield actions likely lend better to second or third base and he maintains enough athleticism to play corner outfield.  At the plate, he sets with a high back elbow, triggering with a small leg kick. Horton maintains a solid approach and swing plane, using the whole field, displaying strength in his barrel.  He made consistent contact and showed the ability to adjust to changes in speed. He is an intriguing prospect that PBR Nevada will be keeping a close eye on him.

2022

3B/RHP, Tanner Hunt (Carson), 5-foot-11, 160, Hunt is a consummate corner guy with some value as a multiple position player that can catch.  He maintains present strength in a stocky frame.  Fielding actions are better suited for reaction positions and his arm plays both at third base and behind the plate. He throws from a high ¾ slot with short tight arm circle.  He sets in the box with high hands, he maintains some length to his swing in a mostly pull approach with limited lower half.

INF, Dillon Damico (Carson), 5-foot-8 150.  Damico maintains strength above his stature. He has reliable infield actions and with weight and strength gains projects to stay on the left side of the infield. He has a solid rhythm and feel for infield footwork as well as multiple angle feeds on double plays. He showed plenty of carry on throws across the diamond. At the plate, he maintains a middle of the field approach, hitting mostly off his backside with line drives to all fields. Damico displays some noticeable quickness in his bat that can be realized in the future.

2023

INF/RHP, Callan Scolari (Bishop Manogue), 6-foot 130, Scolari is a lean and lanky athlete with tons of life in his body. He maintains a loose naturalness both as a position player as well as on the mound. He maintains solid infield actions, throwing across the diamond with relative ease.  Scolari throws from a ¾ slot and creates good carry. At the plate he has good rhythm in a simple approach and releases the barrel well. Scolari’s athleticism may play out better on the mound. His delivery has a nice even repeatable cadence and mechanics. He throws from a high ¾ slot with loose, easy arm action and consistent down plane.  He maintains solid pitch definition. Continued, size and strength development will make him a desired prospect down the road.

2024

INF/C, Rylan Dixon (Churchill County), Dixon maintains developing infield actions and is presently better suited to the catching position. He has solid arm strength for current development and could easily be seen at either position down the road. At the plate he employs a double stride to trigger with a manageable length to his swing and makes consistent quality contact. Dixon maintains a noticeable athleticism for the sport.
