Player of the Week: Austin Cates

Brett Harrison
Nevada Scouting Director

Each week this season, the PBR Nevada staff will be selecting the Player of the Week from the submissions received from the coaches and peers after games have been completed on Saturday afternoons. Submissions will be accepted through Sunday and announced Monday morning as we head into the next week of games.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

The future College of Southern Nevada Coyote has been getting it done on both sides of the ball throughout the abbreviated Spring season. This week he stood out the most among his the rest of the state as he racked up another quality start on the mound against a tough Desert Oasis group, going 5.2 inning, giving up 2 earned runs while striking out 9 batters. Cates can contribute some of his success to his improving velocity, now sitting 86-89 mph while touching 90 multiple times with a trio of secondary pitches that include a slider, curveball and changeup that he is gaining consistency with, but his fastball is what he resorted to when he wanted to get ahead and when he wanted to get a strikeout. In the heart of the Coronado order, he posted a .500 batting average for the week with a double and 4 RBI's that helped lead his team to a 3-0 record for the week. Though this prospect is slotted mainly as an arm, do not discount his bat that has flashed some thunder from the left side that could be a key piece to the Cougars success as we head into the Regional tournament this week.

Congratulations to Austin Cates on earning Nevada's Player of the Week!
