Northern Nevada Scout Day Recap

Brett Harrison
Nevada Scouting Director

The Northern Nevada Scout Day attracted some the top talent from programs all over Northern Nevada, from Fernley to North Valleys to Churchill County the prospects made the trek to Reed High School to showcase their abilities in front of the Prep Baseball Report staff. The Scout Day featured standouts, under the radar prospect and young talent that put their names on the map with their performances on Sunday.

Scout Day Standouts

Starting off the event with the first 60 of the day was Bishop Manogue’s 2020 OF, UNLV recruit, Rylan Charles who posted an event best 6.53 60 Time, only to follow it up with one the most impressive batting practice rounds of the day and finally topping out at another event best 89 mph from the outfield. This is a guy who should be able to step in right away for the Rebels and may be a prospect that draws some attention of some Big League teams come June.

Reno’s 2022 OF/LHP, Oregon commit, Grayson Grinsell is a two-way prospect who has the ability to get it done both on the mound and at the plate. His sweet stroke from the left side lead to his ability to spray the ball all over the yard following it up with an accurate 86 mph Outfield Velocity. He then hopped on the mound, topping out 83 mph with a long, loose arm from a high ¾ arm slot, flashing a heavy changeup and feel for his curveball.

Under The Radar

The Northern Nevada Scout Day also provided an opportunity to improve on previous personal best and that is exactly what Spanish Springs’ Uncommitted 2021 OF/IF Jace Avina achieved setting new personal bests with a 6.76 60 Times, 88 mph Outfield Velocity and an 85 mph Exit Velocity. Avina, a Future Games attendee, is a prospect to keep on your radar as he continues to progress in the stat category as well as adding strength and size to his 6-foot-1 frame which was apparent during his batting practice round that showed excellent hand speed and the ball jumping off of the junior’s bat.

Bishop Manogue’s Uncommitted 2020 IF/RHP Jack Weise stood out on the mound, Sunday, with a fastball topping out at 85 mph coming from an over the top arm slot creating steep downhill action on his fastball and changeup with a 12/6 curveball that flashed backup action and a knuckleball that he was able to locate with late action that he kept down in the zone.

The top fastball velocity of the day belonged to Spanish Springs’ Uncommitted 2020 RHP Jaden Trueblood, who sat 85-86 mph with arm side run on both his fastball and changeup with late bite on his 11/5 curveball. The two-way prospect can remain on the left side of the infield but could also eventually make the transition to second base as well with his simple, clean actions in the infield.

Fernley’s Uncommitted 2020 RHP/3B Matthew Glover is a raw arm with a long, lean build that topped out at 84 mph on the mound with a changeup that he will continue to gain his feel for and a tight 11/5 curveball that he showed more comfort in throwing as he was able to locate it in the zone throughout his bullpen. You can expect his velocity to go up as he continues to add strength and size to his 6-foot-4 frame.

Young Talent

Bishop Manogue’s Uncommitted 2022 SS/RHP Luke Metzker is a legit two-way prospect that featured a line drive filled round of batting practice showing his ability to turn on the inside pitch with power potential to the pull side. The sophomore then hopped on the mound with his fastball up to 82 mph using a short arm cycle and had feel for his secondary pitches that lived around the zone with his changeup at 70-72 mph and a 12/6 curveball at 68-71 mph.

Spanish Springs’ Uncommitted 2022 LHP/1B Gavin Moreno is a developed frame that not only showed an ability to drive the ball with authority throughout his batting practice round, but proved his is a projectable two-way prospect with his fastball sitting 80-81 mph with a short, quick arm action and had some feel for his secondary stuff with a changeup that has arm side fade and a 12/6 curveball that he located down in the zone.
