GAME NOTES:

Game 1–(11) Damonte vs (4) Douglas

RENO HS – On a blustery day in Reno, NV the Damonte Ranch Mustangs took on the Douglas Tigers.  The Mustangs struck first in the top of the third inning on a miscue by the Tiger shortstop. Douglas would answer back with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning on two mustang errors. The Tigers carried the lead intol the top of the fifth inning when Mustang catcher, Nate Guidara (’19) homered to right centerfield, plating two.  The Tigers would send one across in the fifth as well and the score remained tied at four until the top of the seventh when the Mustangs would score seven times in the frame. On in relief of Everett Williams, Carson Smith tossed a scoreless seventh for the win.

Scouting Notes: 

’19 Nate Guidara, C, (Damonte Ranch) Projectable 6’3”, 180, Guidara has an athletic frame with plenty of room for weight and strength gains. He is a reliable receiver with instincts for the position. He sets up narrow and with his lanky build may be better suited for a wider stance providing an ability to get lower in his crouch.  He will occasionally drop a knee, allowing him to present lower and giving the umpire a clear look at the pitch.  He possesses capable blocking and recovery skills.  Strength and development should sharpen recovery time.  He displays arm strength for the position.  Any delay in his exchange is due to some play in his wrist which tends to lead to a slight push in his throws. At the plate, Guidara shows a strong, power-oriented setup, hitting primarily off his backside with some uphill plane to his swing.  He maintains a manageable length to his swing, showing patience and plate discipline.

 

 

GAME 2 – (7) Damonte vs (2) Colfax (CA)

In game two of the Mustang doubleheader it was all ’19 Tyler Hopper. Hopper threw six innings, giving up just two runs. He would strike out seven and walk none.  Damonte Ranch would push across four runs in the bottom of the third and that was all they needed.  Game 1 reliever Carson Smith homered in the contest and Chris Rosa tripled. The Mustangs improved to 3-0 in the tournament headed into Saturday when the will face University Prep.

GAME 3 – (1) Colfax (CA) vs (11) Reno

In spite of a slow start with some uncharacteristic defensive miscues, the Reno Huskies would settle in and starter, Caedon Kottinger would deliver a quality start.  Kottinger threw five innings striking out 7 and surrendering just one free pass.  The unearned run in the first is all the Falcons would get and the Huskies offense would score in all but one frame to secure the victory.

Scouting Notes:

‘20 Caedon Kottinger, RHP (Reno) Uncommitted. Athletic, 6-foot 165, Kottinger employs a 3-pitch mix. He works with a fastball that ranged 82-84 with solid area control. His curveball was 66-69 with consistent depth and change 68-71. Kottinger repeats his delivery and displays a noticeable competitiveness.  He displays athleticism fielding his position on bunts, first base coverages and picks.  Kottinger is well-schooled and his pitchability is ahead of his stuff at this point.  He pitches from a high ¾ arm slot and strength and arm speed make it easy to project him throwing harder down the road.

Game 4 – (0) Nevada Union vs (16) Reno

As much as the score would indicate that offense was the story of the nightcap, the last game of the day belonged to Reno, left-hander, John Barry.  Barry simply needed the first run provided by the Huskies as he would strike out 10 in four innings of work and face the minimum 12 batters.  Barry walked one and preceded to pick him off of first base. Beside the one walk , a hitter flew out to left field.  With the game in control, Barry gave way to Emmett Harvey who pitched a scoreless fifth.  Offensively for the Huskies the big blow would come from ’19 John Kane who homered for the second day in a row with a grand slam in the third inning. 

Scouting Notes:

’19 John Barry LHP (Reno) Lean, 5-foot-11, 140, Barry has lanky frame with a lot of room for weight and strength gains.  He has been on the PBR Nevada radar for some time and his most recent outing is not a surprise.  He pitched comfortably with a fastball at 82-84, touching 85. He maintains consistent arm side run and displayed the consistent ability to locate his fastball inside to right-handed hitters. Nine of his ten strikeouts were looking with six of the nine on inside fastballs.  He pitched primarily with his fastball, providing limited looks at his off speed.  His secondary pitches included a firm breaking ball with occasional cut and slider type action at 74-75 and a changeup with run and sink at 75. Barry pitches from a ¾ slot with a whippy quick arm.  He has a ton of upside. Weight and strength gains accompanied by delivery adjustments designed to help him own his delivery and make consistent use of his lower half will provide velocity gains.
