LAS VEGAS, NV – A lot of baseball being played in the Vegas Valley on opening day of the NIAA high school season.  Some of the intra-state matchups did not prove fruitful for the Northern Nevada Visitors.  In one of the first games of the day the Galena Grizzlies would take on the Desert Oasis (DO) in game 1 of the Diamondback Kickoff.  It was all DO in what turned out to be a 3 inning affair, resulting in a 15-0 victory.  The D’backs were led by none other than Aaron Roberts, 3-3, with a homerun and 6 RBI. Roberts was a double short of the cycle but receive notable assistance from ’20 Colby Smith. Smith was also 3-3 with a triple of his own.  On the mound, ’19 Josh Sharman threw three scoreless and did not surrender a hit for his first win of the season. DO would win their second game as well, defeating Arbor View 8-1. Roberts and Smith would double again and shortstop, '19 Zac Czerniawski would collect two hits, including a triple. LHP, Campbell Holt, a Southern California commit, surrendered just one run over 4 innings.

In other early action the Sierra Vista Mountain Lyons topped the Bishop Manogue Miners, 4-3.  The Miners would lose handly in the second game of their doubleheader to Green Valley 17-6.

CENTENNIAL HS - Across town on the campus of the Centennial Bulldogs, the Bulldogs would host the Liberty Patriots.  The Patriots gave them all they could handle, knotted at 4 headed into the bottom of the seventh before, ’19 Austin Kryszczuk would drive in the winning run with a sac fly to centerfield. Kryszczuk was 3-3 with a homerun in the home opener. Liberty outfielder and leadoff man, ’19 Logan Coons had two hits for the Patriots.

In later action at Centennial, Green Valley would take on the Bulldogs in the second game of the day for each team. ’19 Kris Bow would tow the rubber for home team and Matt Galdi for the visiting Gators.  Both starters performed admirably. Bow threw four innings striking out six. He pitched with his fastball that ranged 86-88, touching 89. Galdi threw six innings, also striking out six.  The Bulldogs would carry a 4-2 lead into the seventh inning, when the Gators would rally for three runs to capture a 5-4 lead. Scott Gruber would enter the game in relief of Galdi and record the final three outs to preserve the win.  ’19 Garrett Nelson doubled and walked twice to pace the Gators while Bow and ’19 Trevor Wright (OF) had two hits for the Bulldogs. One Bulldog that caught the eye of PBR Nevada was Sam Simon. Simon had a big two-run double for Centennial.

 

 

'21 Sam Simon, RHP/3B/OF  Projectable, 6-foot-1, 180 Simon has room for weight and strength gains. In the box, he stands tall with slight bend in his legs, utliizing a leg kick trigger as he cocks the bat tipping the barrel with just a touch of barrel wrap. Simon maintains a solid combination of strength and bat speed. He has an aggressive swing, supplying the power, facing softer velocity. He is a physical right-handed hitter with strength in his barrel that could be a middle of the order type bat down the line.
