Game Notes:

LAS VEGAS, NV – Friday, Palo Verde welcomed the Coronado Cougars to campus. Right hander, '19 Peyton Cole took the mound for the Panthers and was sharp early. The BYU commit threw 3 scoreless innings before surrendering two runs in the 4^th. Cole would throw 4.1 innings in total, striking out 6. ’20 Jasper Nelson would relieve Cole and surrender the only earned run for Palo Verde, before giving way to closer, '20 Paul Myro iV (Oregon State).

The Panthers offense had their way early, scoring in each of the first 3 innings and jumping out to an 8-0 lead. Palo Verde received big lifts from the bottom of their order, ’19 Hunter Chynoweth and '20 George Alonso doubled early to spur a rally and Alonso would double again later in the affair, plating multiple runs. First baseman '20 Paul Shawn Pasqualatto tripled to start a rally and Nathan Bartlett had the “back breaking” double to right field, culminating in a four run fifth to ice the victory.

The Coronado hurlers did not fare as well. Cougar starter, Brayden Buttweiler threw 1.1, surrendering 4 total runs but only one earned before giving way to '21Ian Roemer (1.2), '20 Nolan Patterson (2.0), and '19 Andrew Lutz (1.0), respectively.  The Cougar offense would do all they could to keep their team in it with ’19 Ryan Kiernan and ’19 Jett Kenyon getting three hits each and taking advantage of 5 defensive miscues by Palo Verde. The Cougars would score often in the middle innings eventually cutting the lead to 8-5, before the Panthers put up 4 in the bottom of the fifth to stretch the lead to 7, The Cougars continue to battle but to no avail as the Panthers turned to Paul Myro IV to close it out. 

Scouting Notes:

’19 Peyton Cole, RHP (Palo Verde)

Athletic, 6-foot-2, 175, Cole is projectable with room to add weight and strength. He pitched with a fastball 86-88 early, dipping at times later in the outing, but only for a pitch or two. The fastball flashed late action on his arm side when down in the zone. He displayed a curveball with solid spin and shape 74-77. The curveball flashed depth at peak velocity. He had good feel for a changeup with consistent arm speed and sink down in the zone. With delivery and mechanical development, it is easy to see a future on the mound for Cole. 

 

 

'19 Hunter Chynoweth, DH (Palo Verde)

Physical, 6-foot 220, Chynoweth has sturdy strong body.  He is an aggressive hitter with strength in his barrel. He stands in the box balanced, with a slight bend in his legs, striding short. He maintains a strength over bat speed swing with manageable length and power potential. He runs hard and better underway. Chynoweth is slated to take a Church mission in June but could be a force in the middle of a lineup somewhere, when he returns.

 

 

’20 George Alonso, OF, (Palo Verde)

Compact, 5-foot-6 150, Alonso has a stocky sturdy frame.  The speedy outfielder catches what he gets to and closes well on ground balls and balls to the gap, Offensively, he maintains a simple approach, crowding the plate, with a short quick swing. He utilizes his speed as he will look to base hit bunt when given the opportunity. This “scrappy” player will roll in and take one for the team.  He showed the ability to turn on the ball with two doubles down the left field line on this occasion. 

 

 

’20 Nolan Patterson, LHP (Coronado)

Long legged, 5-11 155, Patterson has a projectable body with room for growth. He has a fluid slightly cross body delivery, throwing from a ¾ arm slot.  The delivery lends deception to his area control. His fastball ranged 79-81 with consistent arm side run. He maintained the ability to get to his glove side, pitching in with conviction. He p[itched primarily with his fastball but showed feel for a curveball at 69-71 and a changeup at 72. Size and strength gains will play huge in Patterson’s future but his pitchability and delivery are solid.  PBR Nevada will be keeping a close eye on this left-hander. 

 

 

’21 Ian Roemer, RHP (Coronado)

Large Frame, 6-foot-3, 200, Roemer is a physical, sturdy bodied right hander.  He repeated his delivery with ¾ arm action.  There is a slight wrap in his long, leverage type arm, throwing 78-81. He has a loose easy arm with good hand speed and finish. Roemer’s curveball had good shape at 71-72 and feel for his changeup at 71-72. Keep an eye on Roemer, when his strength meets his mass, he might see sizable velocity improvements.  He looks the part and it is easy to see future pitchability with current feel.
