Desert Oasis advances to finals.

LAS VEGAS BALL PARK – The NIAA 4A state tournament resumed on Thursday with Game 5 featuring the Northern Region runner-up, Bishop Manogue Miners playing the Las Vegas Wildcats. The Wildcats were preparing to play their third game in less than 24 hours due to the new six team format and tournament schedule. The Wildcats got off to a rough start surrendering three runs in the top of the first and two in the second, leaving them trailing by 5 early. However, Las Vegas would score two in the second and never stop, outscoring the Miners 14-1 over the final six frames. ’19 Brady Ojeda on in relief for the Wildcats quieted the Bishop Manogue bats and surrendered just one run in his outing. The Wildcats were led by ’19 Daniel Jimenez and ’19 Nate Freimuth each with multiple hit, multiple RBI games. Las Vegas advance to play the winner of game six between Basic and Arbor View.
Game 6 featured the Arbor View Aggies versus the Basic Wolves. Traditionally as you progress into a tournament, a team’s pitching wears thin. However, both team’s starters were up to the task on Thursday afternoon. Both starters, Arbor View’s Jesse Pierce and Basic’s Trace Evans went the distance, with Pierce earning the better fate. His complete game two hitter accompanied by his timely hitting led the Aggies to victory, advancing them into the day’s final game against Las Vegas.
The winner’s bracket semi-final pitted Desert Oasis against Northern Region champion, Reno. The Diamondbacks struck first when ’20 Colby Smith scored on a two out triple by ’19 Campbell Holt. The Huskies would fight back plating 4 in the bottom of the 2nd, making it 4-1. Desert Oasis scratched two in the 4th, drawing with in a run. Reno got an insurance run in the 5th, but it was all D’Backs after that with three in the 6th and 2 in the seventh. The Huskies did not go quietly as the plated a run in the seventh. Offensively, Desert Oasis was led by ’19 Josh Sharman with four hits and Colby Smith with 3 hits. ’19 Parker Schmidt had 3 RBI, including a 2-run, RBI single to take the lead. ’21 Jacob Walsh tossed a scoreless 6th inning before giving way to ’19 Tyler Montoya who closed it out. The Huskies ’20 Gunner Gouldsmith, ’19 Ryan Hess, and ’20 Lane Oliphant had multiple hit games.
The final game of the day took place between the Las Vegas Wildcats and Arbor View Aggies, both winners of the day’s earlier games. After three scoreless innings to start the contest, the Aggies jumped on top with 2 runs in the top of the 4th inning. Las Vegas answered with two of its own in the bottom of the 5th. Each team scored twice in the 6th, entered Las Vegas right-hander, ’19 Daniel Jimenez. Jimenez threw a complete game on Wednesday to defeat Basic and was up to the task once again. He threw a scoreless seventh, giving the Wildcats a chance to win in the bottom half. With 2 outs and no one on, Player Leonel Anaya singled through the left side. The catcher was promptly lifted for a courtesy runner, by Vegas skipper, Sam Thomas. The pinch runner advanced to second on a wild pitch. Two pitches later, Oliver Haro-Reyes singled up the middle, scoring the runner from second for a Wildcat walkoff win. ’21 Joel Lindahl continued his great play, throwing 5.2 innings, allowing 3 earned runs. At the plate, He was 2-2 with an RBI. The ‘gutsy effort of Daniel Jimenez, just a little more that 24 hours after his complete game shutout victory, earned him another tournament win. The Aggies’ Niles Scafati-Boyce and Payton Brooks each had two hits for Arbor view.

If Desert Oasis is defeated at 4 PM, the two teams will play again at 7 PM
