Basic Academy Scout Day Recap
January 20, 2020
The Basic Academy Scout Day featured prospects ranging from the 2020 all the way to the 2023 class that look to make an impact on the Wolves as they make their yearly run at a state title. The day was highlighted by the five arms that were up to at least 86 mph, three catchers that achieve a sub 2.00 pop time and consistent line drive filled batting practice rounds that filled the big part of the yard. The athletes used the day to solidify their names as some of the top prospects in their respective class or to make their name known as a prospect to keep on your radar.
Two-way, high level prospect ’21 Hunter Katschke was a common name on the Top Performers list with a 95 mph Exit Velocity, a share of the top Outfield Velocity at 86 mph, the most impressive batting practice round of the day and an electric bullpen with him sitting 89-91 with a power curveball and a changeup that flashed potential of being an above average pitch. Cooper Sheff, a two-way prospect who may find his way towards the top of the 2023 ranking, topped out at 86 mph during his bullpen which is a seven-mph improvement from his 79 mph fastball velocity he achieved at the Nevada All-State Games. One of the top remaining 2020 prospects, John-Howard Bobo, ran that fastest 60 time of the day at 6.72 and earned a share of the top Outfield Velocity at 86 mph. A few top of the order bats, ’20 Dalton Miller, a gritty infielder with a smooth stroke from the left side, ’21 Dominik Tavares, a sure handed, rangy infielder and leadoff hitter type and ’22 Chase Ditmar, a scrappy infielder that is always a tough out with an ability to spray the ball to all fields.
A few under the radar prospects that stood out were ’21 Jesus Gonzalez who was up to 87 mph and ’20 RHP Demitrius Vigil topping out at 86 mph during their bullpens and '23, 6-foot-5 left-handed pitcher Benjamin Smith living in the upper 70’s with heavy arm side run on his fastball and changeup complimented by his sweeping curveball from a ¾ arm slot.
The underclass talent that attended the Basic Academy Scout Day has the Wolves primed for deep playoff runs for years to come.
