775 Winter Update: Quick Hits

The 775 Winter Update was an Open event that provided an opportunity for the PBR Staff to get up close look to evaluate the progress players have made over the past few months during the Summer and Fall seasons. This event provided an opportunity players an opportunity to showcases themselves next to similar high caliber players, many uncommitted, with the help of the leading technology in the game with Blast Motion and TrackMan.

Along with the tech, players also received updated metrics during the Pro-Style Workout portion of the event beginning with the Laser Time 60 Yard Dash, Batting Practice, Catcher Evaluations including Pop Times, Velocity, Receiving and Blocking, Outfield Evaluations and Infield Evaluations.

+ Cal Scolari - Bishop Manogue | USD Commit - The Bishop Manogue product came into the 775 Winter Update after a successful summer campaign that included a standout performance on the mound at the 2021 PBR Future Games, culminating in his recent commitment to the University of San Diego. Though the conditions at the event were not ideal, Scolari still showed improved command of his three pitch mix that includes a fastball that cruises in the mid 80's, a fading change up and an slider that has progressed over the summer with late, tight action and projects to continue improving over the next few years. Keep an eye on Scolari as he is a player we expect to have his break out season this Spring as one of the top arms in the state.

+ Isaiah Mezger - Spanish Springs | Uncommitted - First impression when Mezger takes the field is his obvious physical presence at 6-foot-2, 220 pounds. He lead off the hitting portion of the 775 Winter Update with one of the more impressive rounds of the day, showing his ability to drive the ball to both gaps, staying in his legs exceptionally well throughout his swing to go with his 73.6 mph Peak Bat Speed tracked by Blast Motion. He showed athletic actions behind the plate, moving well for a player with that size posting a 2.00 PBR Verified Pop Time with each of his throws around the bags.

+ Sam Kane - Bishop Manogue | Uncommitted - At, or near, the top of almost every offensive statistical category at the 775 Winter Update, Kane put on a show during his batting practice session with a Peak Exit Velocity of 95.04 mph via TrackMan, Max Hand Speed of 24.4 mph and Max Bat Speed of 79.5 mph via Blast Motion. With all the numbers to back it up, he posted the top offensive performance of the event with an improved timing mechanism using a subtle rocking motion that allowed him to be on time and find the barrel consistently throughout his round. Though his offensive performance was in impressive one, his most impressive stat of the day was his event best 6.55 Laser Timed 60 Yard Dash that could be attributed to his improved physical strength and size.

+ Nico Leonard - Reed | Uncommitted - The freshman announced his presence during the batting practice portion of the 775 Winter Update posting not only the events Top Exit Velocity of 96.22 mph, but the Top Average Exit Velocity of 92.79 mph which translated to a 83.3% Hard Hit Percentage, also an event best. Leonards compact, repeatable stroke allowed him to consistently find the barrel throughout his round with authority to the left-centerfield gap. This is going to be an interesting bat to follow in the coming years and is expected to be a key contributor early in his high school career for the Reed Raiders.

+ Takeo Cervantez - Bishop Manogue | Uncommitted - The Manogue sophomore is expected to have his breakout year for the Miners with his ability to not only hold down multiple positions in the field, but also make an impact on the mound where he has shown his ability to work effectively in the zone. His game is reliant on his athleticism with notable progress being made each event, not always from a metrics standpoint, but from improvements in his fluidity and actions on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. We expect his game to parallel his physical development over the next few years, which paired with his improving actions makes him a prospect to follow.
