Upside 2022s
October 11, 2019
This week, On the Hunt takes a look at some talented 2022 players from across the country including a host of different positions. A talented shortstop, several middle-of-the-order bats, an athletic outfielder, powerful catcher, and imposing southpaw are all featured.
McGwire Turner SS / 3B / Helena, AL / 2022Rankings StateRank: 16 / POS: 4
Turner’s projectable frame and ability to find the barrel on a consistent basis stood out at PBR Alabama’s recent, Deep South Invite, both in workouts and the game. Wiry with some natural lean strength throughout his 6-foot-1, 170-pound frame, Turner still shows plenty of room to add more strength in the future which should only help to provide more power to his current gap-to-gap abilities. At the plate, the right-handed hitter utilizes a minor toe-tap to rock his weight back including a deeper load of the hands. Working slightly uphill through the zone with natural ability to lift the ball, Turner’s quick hands and strong wrists produce some impressive bat speed as he works short to the ball and long through the zone. A future left side defender, he exhibits crisp footwork with confident hands, and showcases a quick arm that is accurate across the diamond. He will likely fill out considerably in the future which may shift him to third base, although the bat and overall athleticism should give him a chance to play a multitude of positions, if necessary, at the next level. There is plenty to be excited about as Turner continues to mature, and he is definitely a player that coaches will want to get eyes on in the near future.
