Uncommitted Underclass Upside
October 16, 2020
With so many college coaches asking for any “names to know”, below is a list of players that I was locked in on last week while scouring the PBR landscape. Included are a collection of high upside arms, an exciting top-of-the-order left-handed bat, and another left-handed bat who has found success against some of the top pitching in the country.
ALL are uncommitted.
Zander Mueth RHP / OF / Belleville East, IL / 2023Rankings StateRank: 9 / POS: 2
Mueth’s compact, polished delivery and smooth arm stroke combine with an uber-projectable 6-foot-3, 170-pound frame to present a highly-intriguing arm to follow in the 2023 class. Working linear down the mound with quality extension out front, there is some whip to the arm stroke before releasing out of a ¾ slot. His fastball sat 84-87 with some arm side life and minimal effort, and Mueth was able to find 88 mph whenever he needed it while still working effortlessly to both sides of the plate. He spins a tight breaking ball with slurve-like shape at 70-73 that has a chance to be a swing-and-miss offering in the future that tunnels well off the fastball. The changeup (78-81) is still developing, some, but shows promise as a solid third-pitch moving forward. There is plenty more in the tank for Mueth who will surely see more strength added in coming years, and with a strong chance to stick as a starter at the next level, expect college coaches to be following him closely in the spring.
