Draft League Spotlight: Joe Sprake
May 18, 2021
Player: Joe Sprake
Position: RHP
School: Elon
A reliever in each of his three seasons at Elon, Sprake doesn’t miss all that many bats but does generate a lot of weak contact -- .206 BAA in more than 45 career innings -- and seldom allows extra-base hits. The 6-foot-3, 210-pound righty works at 90-91 mph and can touch 93 mph with his fastball. His out-pitch is a slider that he throws with depth and short, late action at 79-80 that plays well against same-sided bats. Sprake also has a changeup that he’ll deploy against lefties -- a low-to-mid-80s offering with barrel-evading arm-side fade. He’s enjoyed his best season to date thus far in 2021, racking up six wins and three saves while posting a 3.10 ERA over 16 appearances.
