HAMILTON – Steinert erupted for seven runs in the first inning en route to a 12-2 victory in a mercy rule shortened contest against Hopewell Valley. Eight batters were sent to the plate before the first out was made in the inning, 12 batters total – with the big blow coming on Jake Beyer's two-RBI triple. From there, 2020 2B CJ Pittaro, 2018 C Drayven Kowalski, Chris Cote, and Joey Sacco all recorded hits.
Kowalski had a big day and showed his versatility, going 3-3 with two RBIs including a perfectly placed bunt single. The uncommitted junior catcher is a switch hitter, and recorded line drive hits from both sides of the plate. A lanky, athletic frame, Kowalski showcased a strong arm in between innings with pop times consistently at 2.03 with back spin and on the bag.
2018 SS Joey Sacco and Pittaro are a dynamic middle infield duo, both in the field and at the plate. Sacco was 2-4 with a double and two RBI, and made an exceptional play on a ball in the hole at shortstop showing a clean and quick exchange with little effort. Pittaro is a name to remember for the coming years. A left handed hitting middle infielder with some bounce to his step, Pittaro stood out with a strong, athletic frame. With broad shoulders and a short fluid swing, Pittaro is the cleanup hitter for the 11-1 Spartans as just a freshman.
Steinert is one of the top public school teams in the state and currently ranked No. 10 in PBR NJ's Power 20.
