BOSTON - It wasn’t until high school that college baseball became a dream for Armanis Romero. “Sophomore summer I went to the Top Prospect Games and showed out there,” the Boston English High School incoming senior reflected. “I got some interest after that and realized I can use baseball as a way to college.” Prep Baseball proved to be beneficial in reaching that goal. “Being able to use PBR metrics to send coaches was very helpful,” Romero noted. “PBR events have coaches there which really helped.” Schools like Marist, UMass Amherst and URI showed an interest in the 19th-rated 2025 shortstop in New England, but it was Stonehill that made the biggest impression on Romero. “They saw me a few weekends ago and also last fall,” Romero said. “I went on a visit and liked everything about it. They invited me on a Monday, scheduled a visit for Friday and offered on the visit. I accepted an hour or two after the visit.” “The coaches were telling me how they just moved up to Division I and think they can be something great,” Romero said. “I want to be part of that. I loved the campus and everything about it. I also liked how close it was to home and just liked how the coaches were, there wasn’t any BS.” The fifth-ranked shortstop in the incoming senior class in Massachusetts made an impression on Stonehill. “They like my energy,” Romero said. “They like how I carry myself, even if I’m having a bad game.” An improved game is something that was helpful in getting recruited according to the 17-year-old. “I used the weight room at my school and I put on weight,” Romero explained. “I was 5-8 and 120 a year ago and now I’m 5-10/5-11 and 160.” There is more that Romero has tracked. “I’m running faster and throwing harder,” Romero noted. “My exit velo was 84 a year ago and last week it was 95. My infield velo was 79 and last week it was 90. My 60 time was 6.9 and last week it was 6.5.” Christian Ortiz - his high school coach, summer coach, trainer and mentor - is credited by Romero with playing a major role in his development and recruitment resulting in finding a college home at Stonehill. “This feels great,” Romero said of his commitment to the Northeast Conference university in Easton, Ma., 45 minutes from home. “I have a lot of congratulations still coming in. Now I can have fun, but still put in the work and stay humble.” A major in criminal justice with a minor in business is the plan for the 109th-rated 2025 in New England, who believes he can make a big impact in the program at Stonehill. “I’ll bring energy for my teammates,” Romero said. “I’ll make a lot of contact, play solid infield behind the pitcher and bring speed.” It has the 42nd-ranked senior in Massachusetts thrilled about what lies ahead once high school has ended. “I’m looking forward to being a collegiate athlete, putting in a lot of work and getting my degree,” Romero concluded. |
