Holy Cross Makes A Strong Impression On Reyes

NORTH WEYMOUTH, Ma. - “I had no intention of going to Holy Cross.”

That was the initial view of Jack Reyes, but that soon changed and now the Weymouth High School incoming senior is committed to the university in Worcester, Ma.

“A friend was talking to Holy Cross and they came to one of our games to see him,” the 68th-rated 2025 right-handed pitcher in New England related. “From there they really liked me and they came to another game and I did pretty well. A week later I heard back from them and they said they wanted to see me pitch again.”

Interest increased and a visit took place.

“I went on a tour of Bryant and on the way home coach (Ed) Kahovec called and wanted to get me on campus,” Reyes reflected. “I’d been talking to the pitching coach before that. I ended up on a tour of the campus and loved it. It seemed like a great fit for me, they’re really developing players. 

“He gave me an offer and said if you’re not 110 percent sure he didn’t want me to take it. I knew I was 110 percent and three or four days later told them I was ready to commit.”

It was a fast process according to the 17-year-old.

“It went very, very quick for me,” Reyes explained. “I wasn’t highly scouted last year so I threw a bullpen before this year and sent out a video.”

While Holy Cross was not one of the recipients of the video, it was the beginning of the recruiting process for Reyes.

“I was talking to my travel coach, seeing what colleges' needs are,” Reyes said. “I looked at a bunch that needed right-handed pitchers and also what I wanted to do when I got older. It really wasn’t too stressful. It ended up being five to 10 schools that I was looking at but Holy Cross was definitely the most interested compared to the other schools.”

Endicott and UMass Amherst were among those that were being considered before deciding on Holy Cross.

“Last year I wasn’t prepared but it all ramped up with my velocity increase,” Reyes pointed out. “Instead of the low-80s, now I’m at high-80s touching 90. I did a pitching program that really helped with my mechanics and getting stronger. I put on 10 pounds of muscle and recently touched 90 and was able to sit high-80s.”

Holy Cross saw the 5-9 175-pounder as right for the program.

“They like that I’m able to throw strikes and not walk batters,” Reyes explained. “They also like that I have pretty good velocity and a pretty good curveball. They see a future in me, developing into a better pitcher than I am now.”

The 27th-ranked 2025 RHP in Massachusetts is confident about making an impact in the Patriot League program.

“I talked to a few players going there and they see us winning the Patriot League,” Reyes said. “All the guys on the team are young and there’s a future for us in the 2024, ’25 and ’26 guys helping the program a lot, especially the pitchers.”

It brings a lot of anticipation for Reyes, who has had the aspiration of making it to the next level for some time.

“I always wanted to play college baseball but it wasn’t until the end of summer last year that it became a reality when a few D-III schools showed interest,” the 101st-ranked 2025 in Massachusetts noted. “Playing at the D-I level came into shape in January/February when I made a huge jump in velo.”

Reyes pointed to high school coach Joe Paolucci and travel coach Brendan Morrisey with helping along the way on his baseball journey to Holy Cross.

“It’s super cool and awesome to commit, but at the same time a dream … I just committed to a D-I school that’s one of the best academically in New England,” Reyes said. “Staying near home so my parents and family can come watch is awesome.”

A major in pre-med biology is the plan for the 3.5 student, who is excited about the future ahead at the university located an hour from home.

“I’m looking forward to everything,” Reyes concluded. “Making friends and winning, that's what this whole thing is about. I’m excited to work with all the coaches there.”
