WAKEFIELD, R.I. - There were a large number of schools that showed an interest in Zac Zyons. After the Future Games, the South Kingstown junior trimmed his list in an effort to make the decision easier.

“Schools were asking me to come on a visit,” Zyons explained. “But I didn’t want to waste their time knowing they were not going to be in the competition so I narrowed it down to three.”

Northeastern, Maine and Bryant were the final choices for the 63rd-ranked 2021 in New England, who had also been in contact with schools such as Wake Forest, Holy Cross, Connecticut, Richmond, Stetson, Rhode Island, Fairfield, Winthrop, Dartmouth, Brown,  Fordham, UMass-Amherst, UMass-Lowell, Central Connecticut and Stony Brook.

“Maine has been recruiting me since the beginning of summer while Northeastern started after the Future Games,” Zyons noted. “I can’t remember when Bryant first started talking to me but they really started talking seriously after the Future Games.

“That was amazing,” Zyons added about the PBR event in early August playing for Team Connecticut. “I’m mad I wasn’t a sophomore so I can go back. It’s probably the best baseball experience I’ve ever had, playing against such good competition. It was that or playing in the state championship game, but it’s close.”

Bryant’s interest in Zyons increased after a tournament in Florida.

“They started calling me every day,” the 5-10 165-pounder related. “Then they had me on a visit, the first one in mid-October. I went on another to decide where I wanted to be between Bryant, Northeastern and Maine.”

In the end, it was Bryant that won out in the recruitment of the left-handed hitting shortstop.

“It’s close to home,” Zyons reasoned as to why he chose the Northeast Conference school. “I liked the coaching staff and that they win a lot. They have great facilities and provide a great education.”

With so many schools showing an interest, there was a lot of good to see in Zyons which Bryant related to the South Kingstown 16-year-old.
