CAMBRIDGE, Ma. - An injury helped Sam McNulty discover where he wanted to go to play college baseball. “The summer after my freshman year of high school I got hurt,” explained the Milton Academy sophomore, who fractured his lower spine. “All the colleges that had been talking to me fell off except Boston College. That’s when I knew they cared about me. It’s the only one that showed interest in me after that.” The recovery did not happen overnight. “I was in a brace for two months and then I did physical therapy for a month-and-a-half,” McNulty said. “That was tough. It’s hard to see your friends all playing in the summer and you outside the lines. Then on top of it ... to see all the colleges fall off. “But it was also good for me as far as getting better as a player and a person,” McNulty continued. “Rather than worrying about college I started working out more because that’s what I had to do. I also started focusing on school more in the fall.” Once healthy, the seventh-rated 2021 in New England went to a camp at BC. A commitment followed. “They like my hustle,” noted McNulty. “I remember in the spring they came to one of my games and I didn’t run out a ground ball and they left immediately. We talked about it later and after that I’ve hustled my butt off. They like how I’ve recovered from it. “They also like that I’m a good person with a good attitude toward the other players.” Helping teammates is one of the traits McNulty feels he can bring to the program. |
