 JUPITER, Fla. - Four games into his professional baseball career Trejyn Fletcher is performing the way many expected.
The 58th selection in this year’s Major League Draft - the top-ranked player in New England’s 2019 class - has had at least one hit in every game played to date for the Gulf Coast Cardinals. “I’m enjoying it, I feel I made the right decision,” the Deering High School graduate said. “It’s all baseball, relaxing and then more baseball. It’s the perfect life for me.” Now 18, Fletcher moved to Portland from Delaware in fifth grade, went on to attend Trinity-Pawling Prep School in New York where he committed to Vanderbilt before returning to Portland where he reclassified as a 2019 for his senior year at Deering. The decision to turn pro rather than play baseball collegiately is never an easy one. “It seemed most beneficial for me,” Fletcher said about electing to sign with the Cardinals after being chosen in the second round. “I feel this is going to put me in the best place to succeed.” But it did not prevent Fletcher from watching the College World Series with Vanderbilt taking home the national championship. “I was definitely rooting for Vanderbilt, there are no hard feelings,” Fletcher said. “I committed three years ago, but you can’t throw that away. I’m really happy for them.” Fletcher communicated with Vandy right after the draft. “Coach Corbin congratulated me on getting drafted,” Fletcher said of the Vanderbilt head coach.Tim Corbin. |
