Name: Jonah Ulane
Position: RHP
Class: 2016
Height/Weight: 6-foot-1, 190-pounds
High School: Millard South
PBR: Why did you choose the school you did?
ULANE: I chose the University of Kansas because of many factors. The opportunity to play Big 12 baseball is something I could not pass up. Combine that with the excellent facilities, great coaches, and the brand new business school I was sold. Also, the location is perfect for my family and I, it gives my parents the ability to come and watch within a day's drive.
PBR: What other schools were you considering?
ULANE: I was also considering UNO, South Dakota St., and Iowa Western.
PBR: Where did the coaching staff first see you? How did your relationship develop with them?
ULANE: Coach Price and I began communicating in late July around the time of the State tournament. I would give him weekly updates on how I was doing. They first saw me pitch in the American Legion World Series on ESPN3. Then they got to see me throw in person at their Showcase Camp in late September. From there it took off. Coach Price and I would exchange phone calls weekly and I took my visit towards the end of October. There I got to talk with the whole staff and got a great feel for the program and what they had to offer.
PBR: Do you feel relieved now that the process is over and you can just focus on baseball and not deal with everything that goes into picking a school?
ULANE: Yes there is relief that comes with knowing where I be attending school. It gives me the ability to focus on developing even more, and on the ultimate goal of winning a state championship with my team this upcoming spring.
PBR: Was there one deciding factor that put your choice over the top?
ULANE: The facilities at KU both athletically and academically put it over the top for me. The resources are there to develop both as an athlete and as a student.
PBR: Who has helped you the most to get to where you are today?
ULANE: My family and coaches have helped me the most. They have always believed in me and provided me the opportunities to succeed both on and off the field. They have instilled in me the ethic of hard work, persistent attitude, and the competitive spirit that has gotten me to where I am today and I am very thankful for that.
PBR: What were your expectations about the recruiting process? Was it easy/difficult?
ULANE: I thought the recruiting process was going to be a fun but stressful time. For me, it really started to heat up during the middle of my Junior Year when I was contacted by multiple schools. I wouldn't say it was easy or difficult more stressful than anything, trying to keep up with the season and keeping schools updated. You only get to go through this experience once and I really enjoyed the whole process.
PBR: What plans does the coaching staff have in store for you in your freshman season?
ULANE: The coaches expect me to come in and continue to work hard on and off the field. They want me to compete each and every day in practice and in the weight room, and compete for innings within the staff.
PBR: What is your most memorable baseball moment to date?
ULANE: My most memorable moment so far would be getting to pitch in the American Legion World Series. The whole trip with my team was something I will never forget. Getting to pitch in front of 10,000 plus people was a great feeling, and the best atmosphere I have ever experienced.
PBR: Who is the best player that you have competed against?
ULANE: Cole Stobbe from Millard West. We play Millard West often and he always competes at the plate. With the ability to hit the ball to all fields with power; he is a very tough out. He also plays tremendous defense at shortstop, and is very skilled all around.
