Name: Drew Smith
Position: SS
Class: 2016
Height/Weight: 5-foot-10, 185-pounds
High School: Elkhorn
Evaluation: The 5-foot-10, 185-pound, power-hitting shortstop led the state of Nebraska throughout the 2015 season in home-runs. Shows plus ability to hit and has the athletic ability to play in the infield or outfield at Creighton in the Big East Conference.
PBR: Why did you choose the school you did?
SMITH: I chose Creighton because of academics and because the baseball team is up and rising. Also, Coach Servais knows his stuff and makes players be the best they can be.
PBR: What other schools were you considering?
SMITH: I was considering Nebraska also.
PBR: Where did the coaching staff first see you? How did your relationship develop with them?
SMITH: The coaching staff saw me playing in legion baseball. They mostly saw me during districts and state. Coach Servais called me after the Westside game, and we went for an unofficial visit shortly after the season ended. I met with him and his coaching staff for a half day, really felt Coach was a straight shooter, and that he cared about the players, but also cared about them getting an education.
PBR: Do you feel relieved now that the process is over and you can just focus on baseball and not deal with everything that goes into picking a school?
SMITH: I feel very relieved knowing where I will be attending school and can relax and worry about this season, and enjoy the rest of my senior year.
PBR: Was there one deciding factor that put your choice over the top?
SMITH: The school’s reputation for a good education and the baseball coaching staff were both major factors in choosing Creighton.
PBR: Who has helped you the most to get to where you are today?
SMITH: All of my coaches have been great supporters- especially Ryan Ahart, Greg Ahart, Capp Anson. These coaches helped me in USSSA ball and still help me to this day. Steve Frey, Eric Shannahan, and the Elkhorn baseball staff helped me continually improve my skills. Also, my Dad helped me from the time I was little and continues to give me pointers today.
PBR: What were your expectations about the recruiting process? Was it easy/difficult?
SMITH: I thought it would be stressful, and the process can be difficult, but the relationships I made with the Creighton baseball staff helped relieve the stress and allowed me to relax and enjoy the process.
PBR: What plans does the coaching staff have in store for you in your freshman season?
SMITH:They plan to utilize my hitting and either play middle infield or outfield.
PBR: What is your most memorable baseball moment to date?
SMITH: My most memorable moment about baseball has to be my sophomore year state at Werner Park. We played Skutt and came back from being seven plus runs down to win the game. I sparked it with a home run, then Brian McLaughlin hit one, and then Kellen Jakopovic hit a grand slam. It was probably the most exciting game I have played.
PBR: Who is the best player that you have competed against?
SMITH: The best players I have competed against were Matt and Mike Waldron. They pitched at Westside and are currently at Nebraska.
