Willadsen Dominates as Holly Springs Dispatches Apex Friendship
March 25, 2019
Apex Friendship 1 Holly Springs 9
Game Recap:
Holly Springs used a dominant start from Matt Willadsen (RHP, 2019), a North Carolina State commit, and timely hitting to dispatch of Apex Friendship, 9-1. Willadsen took perfect game into the 6th and a no-hitter into the 7th, ultimately surrendering just 1 hit in his complete game win.
Apex Friendship countered with uncommitted 2019 Ty Peters. Holly Springs got to Peters in the 2nd with a 4 run outburst. After two strikeouts to start the inning, Riley Kinney and Alex Macom would single. A walk to Jason Gross loaded the bases. The 1st run of the game crossed on a passed ball, but it was one swing from Sam Kulasingam that opened the game up. In a 3-1 count, Kulasingam turned on a fastball down and in and deposited over the right field wall for a 3 run HR, and a 4-0 lead.
That would be all Willadsen would need as he retired the first 16 hitters he faced before an error in the sixth led to a base runner. Willadsen would sit the next two hitters down, with help from CF Jayson Arendt who made a spectacular play, ranging to his right and diving to save the no-hitter.
In the 7th, Will Thistle led off or Apex Friendship with a slow roller down the 3B line. Third baseman Trevor Sheehan ranged to make a back handed play, but never really got to the ball, and if the catch had been made Thistle would have made any accurate throw close. Scored a double, it ended Willadsen’s no-hit bid.
In total, Willadsen worked 7 innings, giving up 1 hit, 1 earned run, 1 walk, and struck out 10. In the 97 pitch outing he threw 67 strikes and worked ahead of 15 of the 24 batters faced.
