Western Piedmont Scout Day: Outfielders and Catchers Analysis
October 28, 2017
On Saturday October 21st, over 20 players converged on Wilkes Central HS to show their skills in front of PBR staff and scouts. Each player in attendance ran through a complete pro-style workout, gathering verified statistics in the 60, from their defensive position, and on the offensive end of the game. Each player will also receive a complete PBR profile with an evaluation and video.
Five outfielders and three catchers took part in the workout. Each positional group went through a full live Batting Practice on the field, along with drills in the cage area. The outfielders went through defensive workouts in right field, throwing to 3B and home plate. Max Lecroy (2019, OF) turned in the top sixty yard time at 6.90. The arm showed carry at 84 mph from the position as well.
The catchers went through the same offensive workout, while getting their defensive work in with the pitchers' bullpens and throwing to 2B. Pop times and positional velocities were taken on the throws.

Long arm action works to an over-the-top slot, with some looseness. Accuracy and carry are present. 84 mph out of the hand. |
Catchers
Andrew Parker C / 3B / Alexander Early College, NC / 2021Young frame stands 5-foot-6, 128 pounds. Lots of maturation ahead. Right handed hitter works from a closed stance, using a short stride. Lacks a load in the hands. Needs more strength to control the bat head through the zone, and it should come with time. Pull emphasis at contact with average barrel awareness. Lacks some head discipline at times. Behind the plate, there is looseness in the hips and a decent target presented. Average hands can be overpowered by velocity. Works to receive and block. Long exchange and arm swing work to a high-3/4 slot. Pop times ranged 2.39-2.56 with the ball fading to the arm side on most throws. From the crouch, the positional velocity peaked at 68 mph. On the infield, the feet will need to quicken and that should improve the rhythm with the hands. 72 mph across the diamond on throws. Ran a 7.72 sixty. |
Tristan Robinson C / OF / Freedom , NC / 2019Strength is present in a 5-foot-8, 175 pound frame. Ran a 7.11 sixty. Good setup and shows an ability for the hands to receive with looseness. Loads back in the hands along with a small leg kick. Short stride. Works to stay through the ball, at times lacking some club speed. Gap-to-gap approach with average barrel awareness. When on the barrel, exit velocity peaked at 76 mph. Some looseness in the hips behind the plate. Presents well to pitchers with average hand speed and strength. Elongated footwork allows the arm to transition to a high-3/4 slot. Pop times ranged 2.06 – 2.20. Accuracy and pop time could come with big swings based on the pitch location – when the ball is centered, tends to work with a better line through the bag, allowing the ball to carry better. Balls outside the framework of the body tend to fade. From the crouch, the positional velocity peaked at 67 mph. Also threw from the outfield showing some accuracy and peaking at 73 mph. Ran a 7.51 sixty. |
