Newcomers in the Updated NC 2020 Rankings: Inside the Top 50

Brandon Hall
North Carolina Director of Scouting

Last week PBR of North Carolina released the updated class of 2020 rankings for the state.  The rankings were updated and expanded to the Top 125 players from across North Carolina.  PBR’s staff spent countless hours at games, workouts, practices, and PBR events to continue to expand its coverage of the state and the 2020 class.  Along with the state rankings, the Overall 2020 Rankings were released last week, expanded to the Top 500 with a heavy influence of NC players.

During each season, PBR is working to identify the top players in the state as part of its “boots on the ground” philosophy.  Over 20 PBR scouts worked games, practices, or events this spring and summer and the work showed with an additional 42 players making their first appearance in the class of 2020 rankings.  In the coming days we will dive into these new players, as we continue to cover the updated NC Class of 2020 rankings.  Today we look at the newcomers inside the Top 50.

Newcomers In The Top 50

Nick Neal 1B / Randleman, NC / 2020

The big man's week at the PBR Future Games, August 1 - 4 in Indianapolis has been well chronicled.  We can look back at his evaluation from the week to get a glimpse into how he appeared in the 2020 rankings with such a "bang".

PBR Future Games Eval:
A monster, standing 6-foot-6, 290 pounds, that flashes athleticism and feel.  Working from a tall stance, with high hands, loads slightly down and in.  Wants to work slightly up hill through the baseball with looseness.  Future power is projectable, but the front side is leaving him at times right now.  Quickness is present, but strength plays ahead of quickness now.  Exit velocity topped at 92mph.  From the outfield, the arm is a little stiff working from slots that range low-3/4 to high-3/4, with a bit of a slingers action.  Lacked accuracy, while topping at 71mph.  Ran his sixty in 7.91 on a soft surface.

As he continues to develop, pro scouts will be following his progress with an eye towards the 2020 draft.
