Statistical Leaders: The Performance Academy Scout Day
June 24, 2020
Thursday June 18th saw PBR Scouts converge at Ting Park in Holly Springs, NC to host a Scout Day with The Performance Academy (TPA). TPA's Scout Day featured close to fifty players from their organization. Players covered classes from the 2021 - 2023 graduating years.
During the Scout Day, pitchers threw a controlled bullpen with information gathered on TrackMan and a Stalker Pro SII radar gun. Position players were able to run a laser timed 60, on the artificial surface at Ting Stadium, followed by a defensive and offensive workout. During the live BP portion, hitters used Blast Motion sensors to measure pre-contact analytics and TrackMan measured ball flight off the bat.
Today we dive into some of the numbers produced at the workout. More information will come as the PBR Scouting Staff continues to dive head first into all of the information gathered.

Statistical Leaders: PBR Scout Day with TPA
THE 60 YARD DASH
The sixty was run on an artificial surface, utilizing the laser timing system of PBR of NC. Thirty-four players in the TPA program ran at the event. The top time posted was a 6.73. The median run time from the PBR Scout Day was 7.63.
EXIT VELOCITY (OFF A TEE)
Thirty-two offensive players went through multiple rounds off of a tee to gauge their exit velocity. Five players posted an exit velocity of 90 mph or higher with the top bolt getting to 94mph. The median exit velocity posted came in at 85 mph.
POSITIONAL VELOCITY – INFIELDERS
Infielders were able to go through a workout at either Shortstop or 1B, taking multiple ground balls and working to play them live across the diamond. Scouts are working to gauge arm strength, carry, and accuracy. The radar gun only gives us a piece of the puzzle, showing pure arm strength. Twelve infielders took part in the workout. The top number across the infield was 83mph. The median radar reading came in at 75mph.
POSITIONAL VELOCITY – OUTFIELDERS
Outfielders were able to take a full ground ball off of a fungo, playing through the ball and working to make a throw to home plate. Carry and accuracy were paired with a gun reading to give feedback on the arm strength of each outfielder. Below are the top outfielder positional throws. The median throw was measured at 77 mph from the twelve outfielders participating.
CATCHER POP TIMES & POSITIONAL VELOCITY
In the pro-style workout, catchers workout from behind home plate, making multiple throws to 2B, simulating a stolen base attempt. Scouts again are looking for a quick, clean transition to the release as well as carry and accuracy on the throw. For catchers, evaluators will put a stopwatch on the “pop time” or the time the ball hits their glove to the time the ball hits the MIF’s glove at 2B. Coaches can also time the transition from when the ball hits the catchers glove to when he is able to release his throw. PBR scouts add the radar gun to put a number on the arm strength out of the crouched position. The top pop time in the workout was a 2.11, with a median time from the group of 5 catchers of 2.18. The top positional velocity checked in at 80 mph out of the hand, while the median for the group clocked in at 73 mph.
MAX FASTBALL
Pitchers threw a controlled bullpen for scouts at Ting Stadium as part of the TPA Scout Day. In total, 12 arms threw on the day. TrackMan was used to track and verify all velocity readings. A Stalker Pro SII was also used to flash velocities to an LED board for the player videos, and so the pitcher had some feel for his performance. The top fastball checked in at 87mph. The median fastball for the day was 82.
