Statistical Leaders: Carolina Rockies PBR Scout Day

Brandon Hall
Executive Director, PBR of NC

Prep Baseball Report of NC was on hand on June 11th for a PBR Scout Day with the Carolina Rockies.  Rockies players went through a pro-style workout with the pitchers throwing a controlled bullpen.  Seventy-Four players from the organization took part in the day with 34 arms throwing controlled bullpens.

Position players were able to take multiple rounds of live BP while also working through testing in the cage areas.  Each player also worked out at their respective defensive position.  Today we begin to take a look at the statistics posted from the workout.  In the coming week we will dive into some of the analytical numbers produced on TrackMan and Blast, as well as full evaluations with video on each player in attendance.

By The Numbers:

  • 74 players from the Carolina Rockies took part in the workout
  • 2021 - 2023 grad years were represented
  • 6 hitters turned in an exit velocity of 90mph or higher off the tee
  • 16 hitters were 85mph or higher in their exit velocity testing
  • 6 catchers produced POP Times of 2.10 or better
  • 10 players ran 7.30 or better in the laser timed 60
  • 92 was the top bolt on the mound, coming from an uncommitted 2021
  • 6 arms threw 85mph or higher in the bullpen sessions

The Carolina Rockies PBR Scout Day

THE 60 YARD DASH

Players ran a laser timed 60 yard dash at the outset of most of their workouts.  The course was setup with a slight crown at the 30 yard marker, meaning the run was pitched just slightly uphill for the first 30 and then just slightly downhill for the final 30 yards.  The median sixty time on the day was a 7.61 with two players running a sub-7.00.

EXIT VELOCITY (OFF A TEE)

Sixty-four hitters went through the batting practice rotations.  Hitters had their exit velocity recorded in a cage session, working off of a tee.  For this test, the high exit velocity registered at 94mph with a median score of 81mph.  Hitters also saw their exit velocity taken during live BP off of the TrackMan.  That number will be part of the advanced analytics look, coming later this week.

POSITIONAL VELOCITY – INFIELDERS

Infielders were able to workout at shorstop, throwing across the infield, or from 1B throwing to 2B and 3B in the pro-style workout.  Twenty-nine total infielders worked out on the day with a median arm velocity of 73mph.

POSITIONAL VELOCITY – OUTFIELDERS

Outfielders worked out from right field, making throws to the plate.  Scouts are able to watch exchanges, arm action, arm strength, carry, and accuracy in this type of workout.  PBR adds a radar reading to assist with adding a number to the arm strength grade.  Twenty-five outfielders worked out at the scout day with a median positional velocity of 77mph.

CATCHER POP TIMES & POSITIONAL VELOCITY

In the pro-style workout, catchers workout from behind home plate, making multiple throws to 2B, simulating a stolen base attempt.  Scouts again are looking for a quick, clean transition to the release as well as carry and accuracy on the throw.  For catchers, evaluators will put a stopwatch on the “pop time” or the time the ball hits their glove to the time the ball hits the MIF’s glove at 2B.  Coaches can also time the transition from when the ball hits the catchers glove to when he is able to release his throw.  PBR scouts add the radar gun to put a number on the arm strength out of the crouched position.  The top pop time in the workout was a 1.98, with a median time from the group of 19 catchers of 2.21.  The top positional velocity checked in at 88 mph out of the hand, while the median for the group clocked in at 73 mph.

MAX FASTBALL

Pitchers threw a controlled bullpen for scouts at the Carolina Rockies Scout Day.  In total, thirty-four arms threw on the day.  TrackMan was used to track and verify all velocity readings. A Stalker Pro SII was also used to flash velocities to an LED board for the player videos, and so the pitcher had some feel for his performance.  The top fastball came from 2021 RHP Banks Cox who bumped 91.5 mph on the TrackMan.   From the 34 arms, 14 worked at 82 or higher.  The median fastball for the day was 80.
