Statistical Analysis: The Performance Academy PBR Scout Day

Brandon Hall
North Carolina Director of Scouting

Prep Baseball Report was at Ting Stadium in Holly Springs on Monday June 17th to run the PBR Scout Day with the Performance Academy (TPA).  Coming off a busy weekend with several players competing in the State Games of NC, as well as several teams playing in tournaments, several players were limited but it did not stop the overall depth of the program from shining through.

Position players went through a full pro-style workout, running a laser timed 60 on the turf surface, followed by offensive evaluations, including multiple rounds of BP.  During the defensive workout, PBR was able to measure arm strength from a player's position, while evaluating hands, feet, carry, and accuracy.  After the position players, pitchers that were not restricted from their weekend work load were able to throw a controlled bullpen, showcasing their stuff for PBR scouts.

In the coming weeks, PBR will run a complete breakdown on the PBR Scout Day with TPA.  Below is a look a the statistics compiled at the workout.  To see the complete list of statistics, for each player in attendance, CLICK HERE.

PBR Scout Day with TPA: Statistical Analysis

Top 60 Yard Dash Times

The sixty was run in the outfield on Ting Stadium's artificial surface.  PBR used a laser timer to record the 60 yard times.  Below are the top performances from the TPA Scout Day.

Top Exit Velocity

Position players were able to hit in the cages prior to their live BP.  One of the stations during BP was an exit velocity station where players' exit velocity was measured with a radar gun.  Below are the top exit velocities from the TPA Scout Day.

Top Positional Velocity - Infielders

Infielders were able to workout at SS and 1B, receiving ground balls and working to make positional throws.  A radar gun was used to record arm strength during this phase of the evaluation.  The top infield arms are below.

Top Positional Velocity - Outfielders

Outfielders worked out from right field making multiple throws to the plate where arm strength, carry, and accuracy could all be measured.  A radar gun was used to measure arm strength.   The top readings from the TPA Scout Day are below.

Top Catcher Pop Times

Catchers worked out behind the plate, simulating throws to 2B with a runner stealing.  Middle infielders were asked to straddle 2B and let the ball ride to their body before receiving.  Coaches and scouts are recording the time it takes for the ball to hit the catchers glove until the ball hits the middle infielders glove.  The top 3 times from the TPA Scout Day are below.

Top Max Fastball

Pitchers threw controlled bullpens, going through their entire arsenal in front of the coaches and scouts in attendance.  Below are the top fastballs recorded at the Scout Day, during the bullpen settings.
