SBA Org Workout: Pitchers Notebook

June 6 - 8, PBR was at Charlotte Christian School to watch as Showcase Baseball Academy (SBA) ran their players through a workout and then played intra-squad scrimmages for two days. Day 1 saw the position players run a 60, workout defensively, and take a couple of rounds of BP. Day 2 and 3 saw live scrimmages with pitchers working against hitters.
With PBR Scouts in attendance, we were able to collect some stats from the SBA workout. The 60s were run on the turf at Charlotte Christian, with PBR relying on their stopwatches for the times on each athlete. The early summer organizational workout drew the attention of several area college coaches and there was a positive turnout for the players.
Below, our scouting staff breaks down some of the pitchers that impressed in the game settings. This event allowed coaches an early look at the SBA players. PBR looks forward to tracking the SBA teams this summer.
SBA Pitchers' Notebook
Cody Hughes, RHP, C.E. Jordan HS, 2024
6-2 190 LBS. High effort delivery with a lot of moving parts. Throws from a 3/4 arm slot which creates some arm side run. Fastball sat 85-87 topping 88. Spin 2300 rpm. Curveball 68-70

6’1 185 LBS. Fastball sat 86-89. Slider 79-81. Changeup 81-83. Long arm motion that extends behind the body into a low 3/4 slot. Fastball has some late sink. Low effort delivery.

Fastball 87-88 with 2370 spin. Curveball 77-78. Changeup 76-78. Holds leg lift at top of delivery. Throws off some hitters' timing. Comes from over the top. Works downhill mixing eye levels well.

6’5 185 LBS. Fastball 88-91. Changeup 78-80. Curveball 73-75. Tight compact arm motion. Fastball has arm side run. Turns back to the hitter on leg lift. Hides the ball well. Curveball has sharp break. Showed command of all three pitches.

Fastball 85-88. Changeup 76-78. Curveball 75-78. Stays tall with shoulders tilted up on the way down the mound. Extends arm behind his body. Comes from over the top. Off speed can still develop but throws both pitches for strikes.

NC State commit. 6’1 200 LBS. Fastball 84-86. Slider 69-73 with 2400-2500 spin. Slider is the primary pitch. Has sharp late break. Ability to throw for a strike in any count. Fastball flashes late life when he runs it up near 85-86.
