Procase Spotlight Preview - Position Players

Brandon Hall
North Carolina Director of Scouting

Sunday February 11th, Prep Baseball Report of NC will run its first PBR Procase at Diamond Xtreme in Kernersville, NC.  The Procase is designed to bring top end pro prospects to one facility for PBR and area pro scouts to get an early look for the spring.  The event roster will be kept very small with each player receiving a recommendation from pro scout to earn an invitation.

The Procase will feature six high profile position players from across North Carolina.  While the 2018 class may lack a 1st round talent like Austin Beck (North Davidson HS, 2017, 1st Round Pick – A’s) it does have some depth and plenty of players to continue to dream about.  The Procase will have two catchers, three outfielders, and one infielder workout as position players only.

Behind the dish, two physical catchers will showcase.  Tyler McPeak (2018, North Lincoln HS), a Campbell commit, stands a hulking 6-foot-1, 202 pound frame.  Offensively there is middle of the order type power with leverage in the swing.  Defensively, when the feet work with rhythm, the arm has plenty of carry.  Projection is key and the next couple of years will determine McPeak’s ceiling.

Devin Bartley (2018, Southeast Guilford HS) is an athletic backstop, with an ability to play a corner outfield spot as well.  Physical strength is apparent in the 5-foot-11, 190 pounder.  Works with ease, raw at times, behind the plate, showing carry on throws through to bases.  Offensively, the North Carolina A&T commit, works with a line drive, gap-to-gap approach, creating easy bat speed from a simple base.

In the outfield, Xavier Bussey (2018, Garner HS), a South Carolina commit, will work to show his special combination of speed and strength.  A right handed hitter, Bussey has feel for the barrel in a swing that is continuing to be refined.  When on the barrel, the ball jumps.  Possibly matching some of the athleticism of Bussey will be Sam Zayicek (2018, Lake Norman HS).  Zayicek is an electric left-handed hitter with quickness in his hands and feet.  As the body continues to mature gap power could translate into more from the High Point commit.  The final outfielder is Winthrop commit CJ Conrad (2018, Apex HS).  Conrad is a polished player that has a chance to make an impact toward the top of an order.  His foot speed and arm strength should allow him to stay in the middle of the field as well.

The lone infielder of the 2018 NC Procases is Liberty commit, Jaylen Guy (2018, Southeast Guilford HS).  Guy has an ease to his game, consistently catching the ball and showing carry across the infield.  Guy possess a good feel for the barrel from the right side.  A long strider, he as the ability to glide around the bases, consistently running better than average.

At the conclusion of the event, each player will have their PBR Profile updated with an evaluation, stats, and a video.  With every MLB club subscribing to PBR, the information will be able to be shared with an entire organization as the 2018 MLB Draft gets closer.  PBR will also run several stories, highlighting each player and his performance at Sunday’s event.
