Player Evals: Tomberlin Academy Middle INF & Outfielders

PBR scouts were on hand at Noel Williams Park in Monroe, NC on Thursday September 24th to run a full scout day for the Tomberlin Baseball Academy. The Tomberlin organization makes their home out of Noel Williams with a beautiful playing surface near an indoor facility, allowing a space for players to develop throughout the year.

At the PBR Scout Day, Tomberlin players went through a full pro-style workout, allowing PBR scouts to collect statistics, notes, evaluation information, and video on each player participating. The day began with a laser timed 60 yard dash followed by a full offensive workout and a defensive skills workout at each player's primary position. Pitchers finished the day, throwing a controlled bullpen. For the offensive evaluations and the bullpens, TrackMan was utilized to collect ball flight data out of the hand and off the bat.

Evaluations: Middle INfielders & Outfielders

INFIELDERS

Ty Hubbard SS / 2B / South Rowan, NC / 2022

Positional Profile: SS/2B.
Body: 5/11, 165 pounds. Thin frame, room for growth ahead, quickness present.
Defense: Plays relaxed, soft hands, catches the ball near center, clean transfers, gets the ball out quick to first base.
Arm: R. INF - 72 mph. Accurate, short arm action, high 3/4 slot.
Hit: S. Wide base, slightly open, hands at back shoulder. Smooth load, short stride, hands go back. Direct barrel path, stays through the ball, hands have quickness, has barrel feel using a line drive approach working through the middle of the field.
Power: 79 mph exit velocity from the tee. Better than average bat speed.
Run:7.18 runner in the 60.

Neil Griffin SS / 2B / Metrolina Christian, NC / 2024

Positional Profile: SS/2B.
Body: 5/10, 140 pounds. Thin frame, room for growth ahead, quickness present.
Defense: Athletic, feet work around the ball, plays below the ball, soft hands, clean transfers.
Arm: R. INF - 72 mph. Accurate, short arm action, high 3/4 slot.
Hit: R. Balanced, even base, barrel flat over back shoulder. Hands load back, little to no stride. Loose, quick hands, short to the ball, stays through the zone, lined balls through the middle and to right center.
Power: 85 mph exit velocity from the tee. Above average bat speed.
Run:6.99 runner in the 60.

Roman Huneycutt SS / 2B / West Stanly , NC / 2024

Positional Profile: SS/2B.
Body: 5/11, 137 pounds. Young, thin frame, room for growth ahead.
Defense: Relaxed, fluid feet, soft hands, clean transitions.
Arm: R. INF - 63 mph. Accurate, short arm action, high 3/4 slot.
Hit: R. Tall, narrow, even base, barrel flat over back shoulder. Hands load back, short stride. Loose hands with quickness, short to the ball, barrel stays through the zone, has barrel feel lining balls through the middle and to his pull side.
Power: 79 mph exit velocity from the tee. Average to above average bat speed, numbers should increase as the body matures.
Run:7.89 runner in the 60.

FB: T70, 66-70 mph. 1795 rpm. Good ride out of the hand with 1:00 spin tilt. Elevated in the zone
CH: 66-69 mph. rpm. Average arm speed. Good feel. Some deception with 1:00 spin tilt matching fastball

OUTFIELDERS

Jackson Deal OF / OF / South Rowan, NC / 2021

Positional Profile: OF.
Body: 6/1, 185 pounds. Strong Build, quickness present.
Defense: Plays through the ball, soft hands, catches the ball in front of his left foot, clean transfers.
Arm: R. INF - mph. OF - 81 mph. Long arm action, high 3/4 slot, accurate.
Hit: R. Balanced, even base, hands at back shoulder. Hands load back in a half circle shape, short stride. Short to the ball, flat barrel path through the zone, gets extension out front, some quickness to his hands, uses the whole field.
Power: 89 mph exit velocity from the tee. Average to above average bat speed, some strength off his barrel.
Run:6.99 runner in the 60.

Justin Ripoll OF / OF / Porter Ridge High, NC / 2023

Positional Profile: OF.
Body: 5/11, 165 pounds. Thin frame, room for growth ahead.
Defense: Plays through the ball, relaxed hands, catches the ball off his left side, clean exchanges.
Arm: R. INF - mph. OF - 75 mph. Short arm action, over the top slot, accurate.
Hit: R. Even, athletic base, hands above back shoulder. Short stride, small hand load back. Level barrel path through the zone, some quickness to his hands, gets extension out front, uses the whole field.
Power: 77 mph exit velocity from the tee. Average bat speed, numbers should improve with added strength.
Run:7.17 runner in the 60.

Mason Mutschler OF / 2B / Metrolina Christian, NC / 2022

Positional Profile: OF/2B.
Body: 5/9, 155 pounds. Athletic build.
Defense: Plays through the ball, uses a two hand catch off his left foot, clean transfers.
Arm: R. INF - mph. OF - 76 mph. Long arm action, high 3/4 slot, accurate.
Hit: R. Even, athletic base, hands at back shoulder. Short stride, quiet barrel. Short to the ball, barrel stays through the ball, has feel for his barrel working through the middle of the field.
Power: 78 mph exit velocity from the tee. Average bat speed, numbers should improve with added strength.
Run:7.42 runner in the 60.

Riley Walden OF / RHP / Piedmont High, NC / 2022

Positional Profile: OF/RHP.
Body: 5/10, 130 pounds. Thin frame, room for growth ahead.
Defense: Plays through the ball, catches the ball in front of his left foot, soft hands, clean transfers.
Arm: R. INF - mph. OF - 67 mph. Accurate, long arm action, high 3/4 slot.
Hit: R. Balanced, even base, barrel over back shoulder. Toe tap, short stride, hands load back. Direct barrel path, stays through the zone, barrel gets extension through the middle, line drive approach using the whole field.
Power: 78 mph exit velocity from the tee. Average bat speed, numbers should improve with added strength.
