Pitcher Analysis: Rawlings Prospects / College Prospect Open
August 23, 2018
PBR was on hand at Campbell’s Jim Perry Stadium to run the Rawlings Prospects Scout Day in conjunction with the College Prospect Open Scout Day. The Rawlings Prospects is a club organization that runs teams at the high school ages, and younger. For their scout day, players were run through a full pro-style workout on the turf field at Campbell.
The PBR Scout Day with the Rawlings Prospects ran in conjunction with an Open Scout Day, allowing players from across North Carolina to update their statistics, evaluation, and video within their PBR Profile. All players attending the event are receiving the updated information and video, as well as updating their player grade in the PBR files, allowing PBR to continue to rank players in the various graduating classes. Players with a player grade will also be considered for “Invite Only” events as well as national events like the PBR Future Games and the Super 60.
Today we look at the corner infielders and outfielders from the event. Several of the players in this evaluation showed strength and looseness at the plate. Some of the younger players will continue to develop, adding strength, and seeing their numbers continue to rise in the coming months. Below are full evaluations, statistics and links to the player pages that include the individual player videos.

Ryan Rouse RHP / 1B / West Carteret, NC / 2020Rankings StateRank: 57 / POS: 14
Lanky, athletic frame with room for projection at 6-foot-6, 186 pounds. Quick, loose arm jumps out with a fastball ranging 84-89. Hard ride to the arm side at times. Some effort in the delivery with an exaggerated pause at balance. Level and in-line there is some effort through release. Erratic at times, would find the zone for multiple pitches at a time and lose it for several as well. Slider is hard and late with depth, potentially creating swing and miss vs hitters when above 80. More early sweeping action when below 80. Slider ranged 77-81. Big ceiling to the slider as well. Slows the arm on the change-up. Some feel for the pitch with run out of the hand at 69-70. |
Josh Sadler LHP / OF / Clayton, NC / 2019Rankings StateRank: 291 / POS: 30
Average frame with length at 6-foot-2, 150 pounds. Still maturing and plenty of room to add strength. Hand pump and average leg lift create stability over the rubber. Some rhythm in the delivery, working with a long arm swing to a high-3/4 slot. Fastball has early arm side sink at 74-78. Good handspeed creates late 1/7 action at 63-67. Has feel for spin and any misses were on line and down. Straight change-up has some deception out of the hand at 66. |
Trent Simmons RHP / 3B / Bunn, NC / 2020Rankings StateRank: 75 / POS: 18
Strong shoulders and muscular physique at 6-foot-1, 190 pounds. Strong lower half. Still maturing with room to his ceiling. Fastball touched 91 twice in the bullpen, sitting 85-88. Arm is strong and quick from a long, loose arm action, getting to a high-3/4 slot. Slow to balance, average leg kick, working to pace the delivery afterwards. Choppy rhythm, level throughout, landing on-line and square. Little stiff on the front side. Head leaves the line early. Hips generate speed and get through the pitch, creating a slight fall to the 1B side. Change-up at 74-77 with good hand speed creating deception. In the zone with run to the arm side. The breaking ball is hard at 69-70 with sharp 12/6 tilt. Up-down misses at times as he works to create direction through the target. |
Case Stroup LHP / OF / Apex Friendship, NC / 2020
Broad shoulders and physical presence at 6-foot-4, 185 pounds. Strength is present with quickness. Ran a 7.13 laser timed 60. On the mound the fastball ranged 77-80, seeming heavy out of the hand. Long arm swing with better than average hand speed gets to an over-the-top release. Head clears to the glove side to make room for the slot. Fights for rhythm and has some effort through the delivery. Hip turn at balance with an average leg kick creating some coil. Front side uncoils early, leaving the back side and creating a rotational release. Lands on-line and square, falling toward 3B. Occasional arm side action on the change-up at 72-74 with some deception in the hand speed. Fights for hand position on breaking ball, working to stay on top. Slower velocity created bigger break, rolling through the zone with 1/7 tilt at 66-71. |
