PBR Scout Day: Punisher Prospects - Analysis

On August 13th, the Punisher Prospect club team ran a scout day with Prep Baseball Report.  The scout day allowed the Punishers to be evaluated through a pro-style workout, while the players added video to their PBR profiles.  Players ranged in ages from 2018 - 2020 graduates.

The Punisher Prospects are a club team working out of the Shelby, NC area.  They play in competitive environments throughout the summer and fall and have begun to develop a reputation for developing their players and giving them an opportunity to be seen in the recruiting world

Punisher Prospects - Player Analysis

 

Dylan Beaver OF / RHP / Burns, NC / 2020

Young frame with plenty of maturation ahead.  Thin build.  Tall stance with high hands from the right side.  Hands settle to the launch position while the body loads back.  Short stride set for a level swing.  Average barrel awareness on a line drive approach working the middle of the field.  Exit velocity peaked at 83.  Aggressive and athletic to the baseball, in the outfield.  Athletic through the exchange and transition.  Strong arm swing to an over-the-top slot showing some accuracy and carry at 75 mph out of the hand.  Ran a 7.40 sixty.
Right handed pitcher sat 73-75 from a high-3/4 slot with average arm speed.  Some effort in the delivery as the arm works to sync with the delivery.  Works level and lands on-line.  Showed feel for the change-up at 67-70.  Worked straight with deception in the hand speed, occasionally pushing it through release.  Breaking ball was erratic with arm side misses.  Gradual 11/5 arc at 61-64, using good hand speed.

 

 

 

 

Avery Bridges 1B / RHP / Burns , NC / 2020

Average frame at 6-foot-3, 215 pounds.  Right handed hitter works from a tall and balanced stance.  Utilizes a leg kick to get to a short stride.  Looseness with average bat speed, working level through the zone.  Heavy emphasis to the pull side gap with average barrel ability.  Exit velocity peaked at 81.  At first base, average hands fight to be clean, catching the ball deep in stance.  Feet retract through the exchange.  Short arm action to a high-3/4 slot with some accuracy at 67 mph across the field.  Ran an 8.01 sixty.
Uses a hand pump over the head and average leg kick on the mound.  Hands separate around the belt.  Fastball ranged 75-77, touching 79, with some run.  Long arm action works to a high-3/4 slot.  Stays level throughout the delivery.  Breaking ball sat 66-67 with gradual break.  Tilt ranged from 11/5 to 10/4 as the front side leaves the line early, falling to the 1B side on the pitch.  Some feel for the breaker.  Arm does slow.  Straight change-up ranged 73-75 with deception out of the hand and a feel for the strike zone.

 

 

 

 

Jason Davis 3B / 2B / Burns , NC / 2018

Mature build with a defined lower half at 5-foot-9, 185 pounds.  Open stance from the right side, using a leg kick and short stride as the lower half dives back towards the plate.  Handsy swing, showing good barrel awareness with better than average bat speed.  Level path stayed gap-to-gap.  Exit velocity touched 82.  7.41 runner, worked to be clean with the ball on the infield.  Ball gets deep in the stance, funneling to the mid-section.  Short arm swing with a high-3/4 slot showing accuracy and average carry at 76 mph across the diamond.

 

 

 

 

Chase Gray OF / Highbritton, NC / 2018

Strength is present in a stocky build.  Right handed hitter is balanced and athletic in his setup.  Loads back using a short stride.  Hands start in a high slot, settling to a launch position.  Better than average bat speed works for extension.  Will pull off the ball.  Set to pull.  Strong hands.  Exit velocity peaked at 79.  Ran a 7.29 sixty.  In the outfield, aggressive approach to the ball with clean transitions.  Strong arm swing, loading the scapular, working to an over-the-top slot with some accuracy.  Arm speed measured at 79 mph.

 

 

 

 

Ayden Lail 1B / East Burke, NC / 2018

Left handed hitter works from a balanced, tall base, loading back with good rhythm.  Short stride works back to the plate as the bat head works to a vertical position with lag at the launch point.  Better than average bat speed works level through the zone, wanting extension.  Has fluid rhythm throughout.  Average barrel awareness.  Exit velocity peaked at 84.  Showed an ability to use the field.  Defensively at first base, works to play through balls, fighting for rhythm in his feet.  Ball can get deep in stance.  Short arm action gets to a high-3/4 release with some accuracy.  78 mph across the diamond.  Ran a 7.41 sixty.
Left handed pitcher worked 73-76 from a high-3/4 slot.  Short arm action has some stiffness working to release.  Stays tall through balance, working level and on-line.  Fights for rhythm as the elbow works above the shoulder line in the arm swing.  Breaking ball sat 64-66 with last 2/8 action.  Around the zone, maintained hand speed on the pitch.  Pushes the change-up, slowing the arm.  Erratic at 68-69.

 

 

 

 

Hunter Lail OF / RHP / Burns, NC / 2019

Cautious through the ball on defense, exchanging around the belt and working with a short arm swing to a loose, over-the-top slot.  Some accuracy at 72 mph out of the hand.  Balanced in the box, uses a short stride to stay level through the zone.  Pull tendency on a swing that can cut across at times.  Exit velocity peaked at 83 off the barrel.  Ran a 7.63 sixty.
On the mound, fastball ranged 69-71, touching 73.  Around the zone, misses were on-line but elevated or buried.  Short arm swing to an over-the-top slot.  Stays tall and works with normal effort.  Some rhythm as the shoulders stay level and the foot strike is on-line.  Change-up sat 62-64 with near look alike hand speed.  Shows feel for the pitch.  Breaking ball has erratic shape, fluctuating from 12/6 to 10/4 tilt at 51-54.  Early, gradual arc, with big action at times.

 

 

 

 

Max Lowe RHP / Burns, NC / 2018

Average 6-foot-2, 160 pound frame that can handle strength as it continues to mature.  Recently committed to a lower arm slot, working around the low-3/4 range with a quick arm and average arm swing that shows strength.  Tall through balance, the shoulders stay level and the head drops with the slot as the arm begins to work.  Fastball has occasional arm side run and played heavy at 74-77, touching 78.  Slider is hard, with the slot floating up at times, ranging 66-68.  Sharp, late, sweeping action.  Around the zone with control over command.  Lacked feel for change-up at 62-71.

 

 

 

 

Colson Miller 1B / 3B / Burns, NC / 2019

Power potential in the big bodied 6-foot-2, 230 pounder.  Strength is present as exit velocity peaked at 90 mph.  Right handed hitter works from an open stance, loading back, using a leg kick to shift the weight.  Short strider.  Better than average bat speed.  Strength over quickness in the swing.  Works level through the zone, staying in the middle of the field with good rhythm in the swing.  Aggressive demeanor.  Average hands can stab at the ball when it gets deep into his stance at first base.  Feet retract through the exchange.  Long arm action and high-3/4 slot show some accuracy at 63 mph across the diamond.  Ran a 7.96 sixty.

 

 

 

 

Alex Pendleton OF / LHP / Burns, NC / 2018

Quickness is present in an average frame at 5-foot-11, 147 pounds.  Ran a 7.06 sixty.  Left handed hitter works from a tall base and open stance.  Loads back with the hands.  Bat heads works to a vertical position.  Short stride gets to a level swing, with average bat speed, wanting extension.  Handsy and loose, there is some feel for the barrel.  Pull emphasis.  Repeats the swing.  Clean and aggressive through the ball in the outfield.  Good exchange to a long arm swing and over-the-top slot with quickness and looseness.  Accuracy showed at 79 mph out of the hand. 
On the bump, uses an average leg kick, separating the hands low.  Fastball ranged 75-77 with run to the arm-side.  Good feel for location to his glove side. Breaking ball lacked defined rotation at times, flashing 2/8 tilt with good hand speed at 66-67.  Straight change-up is probably second pitch at this time, sitting 69-73 with occasional arm side run and good deception.  Short arm swing gets to a high-3/4 slot.  Level and on-line throughout, will fall to the 3B side at times on his finish.

 

 

 

 

Luke Scism 3B / C / Crest, NC / 2018

6-foot-1, 175 pound right handed hitter works from a balanced stance, using a short stride.  Bat starts on shoulder, loading the hands in.  Level bat path, working with a line drive approach into the gaps.  Lower half works with some rotation, staying on the backside at times.  Exit velocity peaked at 81.  At first base, uses average hands and fluid feet to be clean with the ball.  Ball can get deep in stance at times.  Slot can vary based on the throw from high-3/4 to ¾.  66 mph out of the hand.  Behind the plate, pop times ranged 2.40 – 2.67, with a positional velocity of 70 out of the crouch.  Some accuracy from a high-3/4 slot.  Ran a 7.61 sixty.

 

 

 

 

Colton Stroupe 1B / C / Burns, NC / 2018

Strength is present in a 5-foot-10, 205 pound frame.  Open stance from the right side, loading back and getting to a vertical bat that has some waggle through the launch point.  Exit velocity of 86 from better than average bat speed.  Flat through the zone, with a line drive approach, staying in the middle of the field.  More of a pull gap emphasis with average barrel awareness.  At first base, average hands work in rhythm with the feet.  Feet are restricted some as he works to stay athletic.  Good arm swing to a high-3/4 slot showing accuracy at 75 out of the hand.  Behind the dish, pop times ranged 2.21 – 2.29.  Positional velocity of 72 out of the hand with some accuracy.

 

 

 

 

Greyson Williams OF / OF / East Burke , NC / 2018

Strength and quickness are present in an average 5-foot-8, 173 pound frame that has some definition in the lower half.  Ran a 6.94 sixty.  Exit velocity peaked at 90 mph.  Right handed hitter works from an open stance, dropping his hands while using a short stride.  Strong hands create some bat speed through the zone.  Level bat path, works for line drives.  Raw with some stiffness, fights for consistent barrel ability.  Ball jumps when on the barrel.  Defensively, cautious to the baseball.  Clean exchanges work to a long arm action and over-the-top slot.  Some stiffness in the release and finish.  Average accuracy with a hand speed of 77 mph.

 

 

 

 

Zachary Wilson C / 2B / Burns, NC / 2020

5-foot-10, 125 pounder with a lot of growth ahead.  Positional velocity of 74 from the crouch, showing some accuracy with a pop times ranging 2.28 – 2.40.  Short arm action and high-3/4 slot.  Loose hips and active behind the plate, presents well while showing a willingness to block.  Hand strength will improve.  Right handed hitter works from an open stance using a short stride.  Rushes the load at times.  Level bat path, wants to stay in the middle of the field with line drives.  Exit velocity peaked at 76.
