New Hanover Gets Strong Pitching, Wins 2-1 in Battle of I-40

PBR of North Carolina was at Orange High on Wednesday March 30th for an exciting matchup between #16 New Hanover Wildcats and the Orange Panthers. The game was part of the Battle of I-40 Spring Break Tournament that runs through April 1st.
In the 1st New Hanover leadoff hitter Conner Marren would walk to start the game but Orange starter Ryan Hench would strike the next two hitters out. Marren would steal 2nd and cleanup hitter Luca Kellog would draw a 2-out walk allowing setting up a Bromley Thornton double to center to score 2 runs.
Orange would waste no time answering in the bottom half of the 1st. Panther leadoff hitter David Waitt singled to right, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a Jackson Berini line drive to right. After the Berini single, Wildcats starter Bromley Thornton retired the next three hitters in order.
After the 1st both teams' pitching staffs controlled the game. Hench worked 5 innings for Orange allowing 4 hits and striking out 5. The Panther hitters would be unable to plate anymore runs against Bromley who worked 6 innings allowing 3 hits and punching out 5. Sean Smith closed the game earning the save retiring the side in order in the 7th. With the win New Hanover improves to 8-2 on the year with Orange dropping to 7-5.
