The premier winter showcase event for baseball players in North Carolina took place at On Deck Baseball Academy in Pineville, NC on Saturday January 28th.  The invite only event featured 76 of the top players in North Carolina.  Running through an extended pro-style workout, position players were able to show off their talents on defense, in the cages, and with a series of speed and agility tests.  The pitchers threw controlled bullpens, keeping in mind it is still January, showcasing their delivery, arm slot and arm action.

Below is a look at the outfielders.  As a group, athleticism stood out.

OUTFIELDERS

2018 Graduates

Lemonte Johnson, OF, East Forsyth, NC

Quick twitch athlete that showed some explosion in the lower half of his 5-foot-10, 140 pound frame.  Ran a 4.06 thirty and followed it with a 9-foot-3 standing broad jump.  Right handed hitter works from an athletic stance, loading back with a leg kick to a short stride.  Slightly wrapped on the load, very aggressive demeanor towards the ball creating average bat speed.  Slightly uphill, working to stay level, stayed gap-to-gap.  Barrel awareness can improve and could translate to better future power.  Exit velocity topped at 80.  From the outfield, right handed arm, topped at 73 using a long arm stroke to an over-the-top slot.  Front side is early to clear.

McKinley Bell, OF, Christ School, NC

Left handed hitter has an athletic build and flashes quickness in several phases.  At 6-foot-1, 165 pounds turned in a 4.00 thirty time.  Standing broad jump measured 8-foot-9.  In the box, works from a balanced setup with a smooth load back and short stride.  Better than average bat speed with a slightly uphill path tried to stay gap-to-gap.  Whippy bat through the zone that produced solid barrel awareness.  Occasional length in the swing.  Exit velocity tested at 81mph.  From the outfield, a left handed thrower with a high-3/4 slot.  Some head whip and looseness in the arm.  Flashed average accuracy on throws that measured 79mph out of the hand.

CJ Conrad, OF, Apex HS, NC

Impressive workout in several phases.  Stands 6-foot, 175 pounds.  Ran a 4.03 thirty.  Measured a standing broad jump at an impressive 9-foot-7.  Arm speed measured at 85mph and exit velocity off the bat also measured at 85mph.  In the box, the right handed hitter stays tall with an open base.  Smooth load back with a short stride lead to a noticeably quick bat that found the barrel consistently.  Fluid, level swing, worked to get extension, staying gap-to-gap.  Strength and quickness show throughout the BP session.  In the outfield, athleticism showed on approach and ball handling.  An over-the-top slot with a long arm swing worked to produce accurate throws with carry.

Jason Hudak, OF, Southlake Christian Academy, NC

UNC Wilmington commit as a RHP/OF worked out in the OF showcasing arm strength from a loose, whippy high-3/4 slot.  Good accuracy on throws that measured 90 out of the hand.  Offensively, works from a balanced, athletic position with a good load and short leg kick.  Right handed hitter creates a quick bat through the, showcasing strength and barrel awareness.  Fluid and level, works for extension, punishing balls through the middle of the field.  Exit velocity topped at 84, but the ball seemed to carry much better in BP rounds.  Ran a 4.13 thirty and produced a standing broad jump of 8-foot-5.

Davon Alston-Thomas, OF, Western Guilford HS, NC

Lanky athlete that shows flashes of strength in several phases.  Stands 6-foot, 181 pounds and turned in a thirty time of 4.10.  Standing broad jump tested at 8-foot-5.  Offensively is balanced and loads back with a short stride.  Level bat path works to stay in the middle.  Some timing issues allow the bat to drag at times and create some barrel awareness issues.  When on time the ball can jump off the barrel, showcasing an exit velocity of 87mph.  In the outfield, the arm words with some effort as the slot can float based on the front side clearing early.  Arm speed measured at 75 with some accuracy.

Dalton Williams, OF, North Gaston HS, NC

Physical build at 6-foot-1, 195 pounds.  Swing works with more strength than quickness, producing an exit velocity of 89.  Balanced and athletic in the box, stands tall from the left side of the plate.  Short stride works to a better than average bat speed , slightly uphill through the zone.  Pull conscious and finished with average balance.  Ran a 4.10 thirty and tested with a 7-foot-5 standing broad jump.  From the outfield, the arm works with ease, producing carry from an over-the-top slot.  Hand speed measured at 82 out of the hand.

Andrew Vladyka, OF, Jacksonville HS, NC

2019 Graduates

Trey Tujetsch, OF, Ardrey Kell HS, NC

Works easy to produce a lot of solid results from an athletic frame that can add strength.  Listed at 6-foot, 165 pounds ran a 4.03 thirty and arm strength tested at 85mph from the outfield.  Right handed thrower works free and easy into a repeatable high-3/4 slot.  Advanced accuracy for the age.  In the box, right handed hitter is simple and easy producing premium barrel awareness.  Balanced setup and short stride work to a better than average bat quickness.  Level path stayed gap-to-gap.  Head posture is very disciplined throughout.  Exit velocity topped at 79. Standing broad jump tested at 7-foot-11.

Keanu Buentipo, OF, Forestview HS, NC

Athletic with an intriguing frame, listed at 6-foot-3, 170 pounds.  Ran a very quick 3.84 thirty.  Standing broad jump tested at 8-foot-4.  Raw at times, the emphasis is aggression and hard contact on all swings.  Works from a tall setup with a smooth load back.  Short stride works to create better than average bat speed.  Aggression through the baseball, wanting extension and driving slightly uphill, works the middle of the field.  Future power can be projected.  Current exit velocity tested at 86.  Loud round of BP.  From the outfield, the righty has a long arm path, allowing the body to load up and work through the target.  The head clears the line early, creating some accuracy issues.  Arm strength tested at 83mph out of the hand.

Ethan Haislip, OF, Cuthbertson HS, NC

Powerful build in the 5-foot-10, 160 pound frame.  Ran a 4.15 thirty and showed explosion with a 8-foot-11 standing broad jump.  Offensively, from the right side, favors strength over quickness.  Has aggression in every swing working with a short, level approach, staying in the middle of the field with a fluid nature that produces a lot of barrels.  Starts from a tall stance with an athletic base.  Finishes with good balance.  Exit velocity topped at 80, but BP produced better carry.  Did not throw from the outfield as he pitches too, touching 87 from the mound.

Christian Staresina, OF, Heritage HS, NC

Quick twitch player flashed with a 3.97 thirty.  Right handed hitter works from a balanced stance with a short leg kick.  Slightly uphill, geared to pull produced average bat speed with an exit velocity of 81.  Lacked some barrel awareness at times.  At 5-foot-11, 160 pounds, the young frame will mature moving forward.  Standing broad jump tested at 8-foot-6.  From the outfield, the righty works with some effort in the arm, clearing the front side, and locking the throwing arm prior to turning the ball over early.  Arm strength measured at 68mph.

Matt Hill, OF, South Mecklenburg HS, NC

Turned in a top thirty time of 3.78 for the event.  Also registered an impressive 9-foot standing broad jump.  Athletic and powerful in a 5-foot-9, 160 pound frame.  Offensively, the right handed hitter works from a balanced stance, loading back with a short stride.  Better than average bat speed produced an exit velocity of 87.  Good approach, works level, staying gap-to-gap.  Quiet, with barrel awareness and quick hands.  From the outfield, the arm works slightly uphill from an over-the-top slot with head clearance.  Arm strength measured at 72mph.

Jackson Galbraith, OF, TC Roberson HS, NC

Good athlete that has strength packed into a 6-foot, 160 pound frame.   Ran a 4.19 thirty and produced a solid 8-foot standing broad jump.  Offensively, sets up as balanced with a short stride, while loading the barrel to a vertical position.  Wants extension as he works slightly uphill, staying in the middle of the field.  Exit velocity topped at 81.  In the outfield, the arm worked with ease to a high-3/4 slot where the ball showed good carry and accuracy.   Slightly dialed down (due to throwing a bullpen earlier), the arm strength tested at 80mph.
