Northern Guilford 1 Myers Park 6
PBR was in Charlotte on Tuesday for the NCHSAA 4A 1st Round Game featuring Northern Guilford and Myers Park. Northern entered the game 13-9 overall, finishing 2nd in the Metro 4A Conference. The Mustangs of Myers Park hosted the game, finishing the regular season 19-4, 2nd in the South Meck 4A Conference.
The early story of the game was Kaleb Tischler who worked into the 6th for the Mustangs. A very efficient outing, saw the righty only throw 68 pitches, striking out 3 and giving up just 3 hits. He kept the Night Hawks off balance, locating his fastball down in the zone with some sink and attacking with a short, curveball that just missed barrels enough to create early, soft contact in at-bats.
The Mustang offense would get on the board in the 1st. With two quick outs, Owen Williams and William Bryant connected on back to back doubles, giving the Mustangs a 1-0 lead.
After scoring 1 again in the 3rd, Myers Park would break the game open in the 4th. A leadoff error followed by a 1 out walk put runners at 1st and 2nd. Russell Golembe singled home Max Perry and Owen Anderson after they moved up on a double steal. A two out error would later score Golembe.
In the top of the 6th, down 6-0, the Night Hawks got on the board with a leadoff homerun from Jay Allred. Northern would threaten in the 7th, loading the bases with 2 outs but Jim Johnson coerced a soft ground ball to get the save.
Myers Park will travel to Ardrey Kell HS for Round 2 of the State Tournament, giving them a shot at their conference rival. Ardrey Kell won both meetings during the regular season, 1-0 in each game. In the conference tournament, Myers Park won the final matchup between the two 5-3.
