New Hanover Takes Championship with Team Win

New Hanover steam rolled a very good club in Patriot HS out of Virginia to take the Ashley Spring Break Tournament Championship by a score of 9-1.  Blake Walston worked 6 innings in the win, surrendering just 4 hits and 1 run.

Offensively, Kyle Smith paced the Wildcats, going 3-4, with 2 home runs, a double  and 7 RBI. For his effort over the week, Smith was named tournament MVP. In total, New Hanover laced 10 hits, 6 of which were for extra bases.

Hoggard Slams Laney

For the second time in two days, the Hoggard offense came alive and abruptly ended their game in the Ashley Spring Break Tournament.  Today Laney was on the receiving end as the Vikings scored 9 fourth inning runs, to win in 5 innings by a 12-0 score.

The big blow in the 4th came from Matthew Suggs, a UNC Wilmington commit.  Suggs doubled in the 3rd as part of a 3 run inning but his 3-run home run to left in the 4th eliminated any doubt left in the game.

On the mound, Austin Kenyon worked 5 innings in the complete game win.  He battled command but threw enough strikes, with a 3-pitch mix to keep Laney at bay.

The 8 and 9 hole hitters for Hoggard did damage to set the table for Suggs in the leadoff position.  Ben Park and Parker Nolan combined for 5 hits, 4 RBI, and 4 Runs Scored.

King Gets Shutout in Ashley Victory

Price King worked a complete game shutout, pitching out of a couple of jams to seal a 1-0 win over Langley HS (VA) in the first game of the final day of the Wilmington Spring Break tournament at Ashley HS.

Ashley scored one in the first with A Evans doubling home Kyle Carpenter.   Michael Sevila spun a gem himself after the first inning run, working 6 innings, striking out 7, and using 83 pitches to do so.

Price King was the story of the game as the lefty flooded the zone with a three pitch mix.  The fastball topped at 83, holding 80-81 into the 7th. He only allowed 4 hits, while striking out 12.  In the 5th, King worked out of a bases loaded, 1 out jam with a strikeout on a breaking ball followed by another strikeout on an elevated fastball.

Ashley entered the Sring Break Tournament as the No. 9 ranked team in the PBR/NCBCA Coaches Poll, but went 1-2 on the week.  They will enter their spring break and return to action next week.
